1. A machine-implemented method of associating pupils present in a scene to corresponding subjects, comprising the operations of:

  • receiving a machine-readable representation of visually perceivable characteristics of multiple pupil candidates corresponding to multiple subjects in a scene;

    associating each pupil candidate with one of the multiple subjects in the scene by examining at least one of the following;

    (1) one or more of the visually perceivable characteristics of the pupil candidates at one sample time, and (2) any changes in one or more of the visually perceivable characteristics of the pupil candidates during a sampling period; and

    providing a machine-readable output representing the association of pupil candidates with subjects in the scene.
