Abstract

According to the invention, a multilayered image sensor is back mounted to a plate, and the plate in turn, is installed in a holding pocket of a device. In that the scheme takes advantage of a high controllability of a mounting plate'"'"'s thickness, the mounting scheme provides a tight control of holding forces with which an image sensor is secured in an imaging device. In that the scheme provides for back mounting of image sensor on a planar surface, the mounting system provides tight control of an imaging assembly'"'"'s pixel plane to fixed point in space distance.

Claims

1. An optical reader comprising:

an imaging system including an imaging axis and an image sensor;

an illumination system;

a frame carrying at least one component of said imaging system;

a member having at least one substantially planar insulating surface disposed on said frame, and

a planar circuit board carrying said frame,

wherein said image sensor is back mounted to said planar insulating surface so that a back surface of said image sensor is biased against said substantially planar insulating surface, and wherein said planar insulating surface is positioned in said frame substantially perpendicularly relative to said planar printed circuit board.

2. An optical reader comprising:

an imaging system including an imaging axis and an image sensor;

an illumination system;

a frame carrying at least one component of said imaging system;

a member having at least one substantially planar insulating surface disposed on said frame,

wherein said image sensor is back mounted to said planar surface so that a back surface of said image sensor is biased against said substantially planar insulating surface, and

wherein said frame includes a holding pocket, and wherein said member having a planar insulating surface is disposed in said holding pocket.

3. The optical reader of claim 2, wherein said frame includes a screw hole adapted to receive a screw for holding said member in said holding pocket.

4. An optical reader comprising:

an imaging system including an imaging axis and an image sensor;

an illumination system;

a frame carrying at least one component of said imaging system;

a member having at least one substantially planar insulating surface disposed on said frame, and

a substantially unfolded imaging axis extending substantially coplanar with a major axis of said frame,

wherein said image sensor is back mounted to said planar surface so that a back surface of said image sensor is biased against said substantially planar insulating surface, and wherein said substantially planar insulating surface on which said image sensor is mounted is substantially perpendicular with said imaging axis.

5. An optical reading device comprising:

a frame for holding at least one optical component of said reader;

an imaging axis;

an image sensor mounting member disposed in said frame, said image sensor mounting member having at least one substantially planar surface, said image sensor mounting member and said frame defining an aperture;

an image sensor having at least one lead frame, wherein said image sensor is mounted to said mounting member so that said lead frame extends through said aperture.

6. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor includes a pair of lead frames.

7. The optical reading device of claim 6, wherein each of said pair of lead frames includes eleven pins.

8. The optical reading device of claim 5, further comprising adhesive material interposed between said image sensor and said image sensor mounting member.

9. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor mounting member and said frame alone define said aperture.

10. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor mounting member and said frame define at least two sides of said aperture.

11. The optical reading device of claim 5, further comprising a flex strip soldered to each of said at least one lead frame.

12. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor is biased against said image sensor mounting member.

13. The optical reading device of claim 12, wherein said biasing is accomplished using a securing material chosen from the group of securing materials consisting of:

adhesives, tapes, and solders.

14. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said frame includes a plurality of lamp brackets.

15. The optical reading device of claim 14, wherein each of said plurality of lamp brackets secures a light emitting diode (LED).

16. The optical reading device of claim 15, wherein four light emitting diodes (LEDs) are secured by said plurality of lamp brackets.

17. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor mounting member includes opposing side walls delimiting said aperture, wherein said opposing side walls operate to bench said at least one lead frame extending through said aperture to prevent at least one of sliding or twisting of said image sensor.

18. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said at least one lead frame comprises top and bottom lead frames, and wherein said image sensor mounting member includes side wall surfaces sufficient to bench both sides of each of said top and bottom lead frames of said image sensor so as to prevent at least one of sliding or twisting of said image sensor.

19. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said mounting member includes a bottom edge.

20. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said mounting member includes a bottom edge and side walls, and wherein said aperture includes a closed perimeter delimited by said bottom edge, said side walls, and said frame.

21. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said aperture is sized to a length approximately equal to a length of said at least one lead frame so that said opposing side walls operate to prevent at least one of sliding or twisting of said image sensor.

22. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor mounting member is a single piece member formed integral with said frame.

23. The optical reading device of claim 5, wherein said image sensor mounting member includes at least one side wall delimiting said aperture.

24. An optical reader comprising:

an imaging system including an imaging axis and an image sensor;

an illumination system;

a frame carrying at least one component of said imaging system;

a member having at least one substantially planar insulating surface disposed on said frame,

wherein said image sensor is back mounted to said planar surface so that a back surface of said image sensor is biased against said substantially planar insulating surface,

wherein said at least one substantially planar insulating surface on which said image sensor is biased comprises a plurality of wall sections, and

wherein said member mounting said image sensor includes a cutout section for benching said lead frame of said image sensor.

25. An optical reader comprising:

a frame for carrying at least one imaging or illumination component of said reader;

an image sensor mounting member disposed on said frame for receiving an image sensor, said image sensor member and said frame defining an aperture;

an image sensor mounted on said image sensor mounting member, wherein said image sensor is biased toward a surface of said image sensor mounting member, and wherein at least one lead of said image sensor extends through said aperture.

26. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said mounting member includes a cutout section for benching at least one lead of said image sensor.

27. The optical reader of claim 26, wherein said cutout section is partially delimited by a top edge of said mounting member.

28. The optical reader of claim 26, wherein said at least one lead comprises two rows of pins, and wherein said device further includes a flex strip soldered to said two rows of pins and biasing said image sensor against said image sensor mounting member.

29. The optical reader of claim 26, further comprising adhesive material interposed between said image sensor and said image sensor mounting member.

30. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor is biased toward said surface of said image sensor mounting member using a securing material chosen from the group of securing materials consisting of:

adhesives, tapes, and solders.

31. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said at least one lead comprises a row of pins.

32. The optical reader of claim 31, wherein said image sensor mounting member includes side walls delimiting said aperture, and wherein said side walls operate to bench said row of pins extending through said aperture to prevent at least one of sliding or twisting of said image sensor.

33. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said mounting member includes a bottom edge and side walls, and wherein said aperture includes a closed perimeter delimited by said bottom edge, said side walls, and said frame.

34. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said at least one lead comprises two rows of pins and wherein said image sensor mounting member includes side wall surfaces sufficient to bench both of said rows of pins of said image sensor.

35. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said at least one lead comprises at least one row of pins, and wherein said aperture is sized to a length approximately equal to a length of said at least one row of pins so that said opposing side walls operate to prevent at least one of sliding or twisting of said image sensor.

36. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor mounting member is a single piece structure formed integral with said frame.

37. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor mounting member includes at least one side wall delimiting said aperture, wherein said at least one lead comprises at least one row of pins, wherein said at least one row of pins extends through said aperture, and wherein said at least one side wall operates to bench said at least one row of pins extending through said aperture.

38. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said at one least lead comprises at least one row of pins.

39. The optical reader of claim 38, wherein each of said at least one row of pins includes eleven pins.

40. The optical reader of claim 39, further comprising a flex strip soldered to each of said at least one row of pins.

41. The optical reader of claim 25, further comprising adhesive material interposed between said image sensor and said image sensor mounting member.

42. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor mounting member and said frame alone define said aperture.

43. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor mounting member and said frame define at least two sides of said aperture.

44. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said frame includes a plurality of lamp brackets.

45. The optical reader of claim 44, wherein each of said plurality of lamp brackets secures a light emitting diode (LED).

46. The optical reader of claim 45, wherein four light emitting diodes (LEDs) are secured by said plurality of lamp brackets.

47. The optical reader of claim 25, wherein said image sensor mounting member includes at least one side wall delimiting said aperture.

48. An optical reader comprising:

an imaging system including an imaging axis and an image sensor;

an illumination system;

a frame carrying at least one component of said imaging system, said frame having a forward and a back end;

a member having at least one substantially planar insulating surface disposed on said frame,

wherein said image sensor is back mounted to said planar surface so that a back surface of said image surface is biased against said substantially planar insulating surface,

wherein said at least one substantially planar insulating surface on which said image sensor is biased comprises a plurality of wall sections,

wherein said mounting member defines said back end, and

wherein substantially an entire lead frame of said image sensor extends through said aperture.
