1. A real time three dimensional imaging catheter apparatus configured to emit ultrasonic energy for volumetric scanning and receive reflected ultrasonic energy, the apparatus comprising:

  • a mounting plate having a first and a second side wherein the mounting plate is transparent to ultrasonic energy and acoustically matched to a backing material overlying the first side of the mounting plate;

    a plurality of spaced holes formed through the mounting plate, wherein a spacing between the holes is in a range between about 0.01 mm and 0.2 mm and wherein a diameter of the holes is in a range between about 0.01 mm and 0.2 mm;

    a plurality of conductors, having proximal and distal ends, wherein the distal ends of the plurality of conductors are associated with corresponding holes in the first side of the mounting plate wherein the plurality of conductors are positioned so as to be substantially perpendicular to the mounting plate; and

    an ultrasonic transducer phased array connected to and overlying the second side of the mounting plate wherein an element of the ultrasonic transducer phased array is operably responsive to a corresponding conductor associated with a corresponding hole in the mounting plate.
