1. A misalignment detection system for a steering system comprising:

  • a steering wheel torque sensor generating a steering wheel torque signal indicative of the steering torque induced in a steering wheel;

    a memory capable of storing at least one predetermined steering wheel angle value and at least one predetermined steering wheel torque value; and

    a logic device coupled to said steering wheel torque sensor and said memory, said logic device capable of generating a steering wheel angle estimate, said logic device further capable of comparing said steering wheel angle estimate with said at least one predetermined steering wheel angle value, said logic device further capable of comparing said steering wheel torque signal with said at least one predetermined steering wheel torque value;

    indicating a misalignment when said steering wheel torque is required to maintain said vehicle in a condition of traveling in a substantially straight line.
