1. A system for determining position information for a vehicle traveling along a route using only three GPS satellites, said system comprising:

Abstract
A terrestrial C/A code GPS receiver system derives along-track position information while tracking as few as two GPS satellites by use of conventional altitude hold and a cross-track hold mode in which the maximum expected deviation of the vehicle from the expected track is estimated by, for example, knowledge or prediction of the width of the roadway or other track. To maintain accuracy, cross-track hold is alternated with clock hold to update the cross-track estimate when changes in vehicle direction are detected or when a predetermined period has elapsed.

10. The system of claim 6 wherein the means for estimating cross-track data further comprises:

11. The system of claim 6 wherein the operating parameters of the means for obtaining along-track and time data from the two available satellites and the means for estimating cross-track data may be switched such that cross-track data is obtained from the satellites while time data is estimated.

12. The system of claim 11 further comprising means for comparing a cross-track error to a predetermined limit and wherein time is estimated instead of cross-track when the error exceeds the limit.

13. The system of claim 11 further comprising a steady state detector adapted to monitor the vehicle for movement divergent from an expected path and wherein time is estimated instead of cross-track when the movement is divergent.

14. A system for determining position information for a vehicle traveling along a route using only one GPS satellite, said system comprising:

means for obtaining along-track data from the one available satellite;
means for estimating altitude data;
means for estimating cross-track data;
means for estimating time data; and

19. A system for determining along-track position information for a vehicle traveling along a route, said system comprising:

a GPS receiver associated with the vehicle and adapted to track two GPS satellites;
means for estimating cross-track hold position information related to a distance of the vehicle transverse to the route and clock hold information related to a time of arrival of signals when one of the two GPS satellites is obscured; and
means for combining the estimated cross-track and clock hold position information with information derived from the GPS satellite that is not obscured to derive the along-track position information. - View Dependent Claims (20)

21. A method of powering a GPS receiver during acquisition and tracking of a plurality of satellites, the receiver including a real time clock having an associated error, said method comprising:

providing a button, the activation of which causes the receiver to enter a fix mode of operation during which a perceptually instantaneous navigation solution is provided;
during the fixed mode;
entering a sleep mode during which a minimum amount of power is provided to the receiver;
remaining in sleep mode until a maximum allowable clock error has occurred;
upon expiration of the sleep mode, resuming tracking for a selected satellite;
updating the real time clock in the receiver using the selected satellite signal;
if a fix is required, resuming tracking for all satellites, otherwise, entering the sleep mode again; and
during a nonfixed mode, alternating between the sleep mode and tracking.
