1. A method for remotely identifying software installed on a remote network node in a distributed computing system, comprising the steps of:

  • obtaining a list of software files installed on said network node;

    maintaining a software audit file containing properties of a number of known software files;

    matching properties of said list of installed software files to properties in said software audit file;

    identifying an unknown software file that does not appear in said software audit file; and

    generating an instruction to be executed by said remote network node to provide information identifying said unknown software file to a central server.
