1. A selective organ cooling system, comprising:

  • a flexible catheter insertable into a blood vessel serving a selected organ of a patient;

    a cooling element attached to a distal end of said catheter, said cooling element comprising a plurality of heat transfer segments, said cooling element further comprising a flexible bellows connecting each of said heat transfer segments to adjacent said heat transfer segments;

    a plurality of surface irregularities on each said segment of said cooling element, said surface irregularities being shaped and arranged to create turbulence in adjacent fluid; and

    a heat transfer device adapted to apply warming to the remainder of the patient'"'"'s body, exclusive of the selected organ being cooled by said cooling element.
