Abstract

A visible light source adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for generating visible light to be used to create warning signals which are viewed by observers remote from the vehicle. A dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and adjacent to the visible light source transmits at least some of the visible light generated by the light source and reflects at least some of the visible light generated by the light source. The transmitted and reflected light provides warning light signals within different wavelength ranges when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

Claims

1. A light for a vehicle comprising:

a visible light source adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for generating visible light creating warning signals which are viewed by observers remote from the vehicle;

a dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle adjacent to the visible light source;

said dichroic element adapted to transmit at least some of the visible light generated by the light source; and

said dichroic element adapted to reflect at least some of the visible light generated by the light source such that the reflected light provides a warning light signal within a wavelength range when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

The light of claim 1 further comprising a beam forming reflector having a focal point coincident with the visible light source such that the reflector reflects a beam of light which is at least partially intersected by the element, and further comprising a sleeve at least partially surrounding the light source, said sleeve having a first portion reflecting light toward the beam forming reflector.

The light of claim 1 further comprising a beam forming reflector having a focal point coincident with the visible light source such that the reflector reflects a beam of light which is at least partially intersected by the element, and further comprising a coating on the light source, said coating having a first portion reflecting light toward the beam forming reflector.

The light of claim 1 wherein the dichroic element comprises a first dichroic element, wherein the warning signal comprises a first warning signal within a first wavelength range and further comprising a second dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and adjacent to the visible light source, said second dichroic element positioned with respect to the first dichroic element to transmit at least some of the visible light transmitted by the first dichroic element, said second dichroic element positioned with respect to the first dichroic element to reflect at least some of the visible light transmitted by the first dichroic element as a second warning light signal within a second wavelength range different than the first wavelength range when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

The light of claim 4 further comprising a third dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and adjacent to the visible light source, said third dichroic element positioned with respect to the second dichroic element to transmit at least some of the visible light transmitted by the second dichroic element, said third dichroic element positioned with respect to the second dichroic element to reflect at least some of the visible light transmitted by the second dichroic element as a third warning light signal within a third wavelength range different than the first and second wavelength ranges when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

6. The light of claim 1 wherein the dichroic element comprises a reflective filter.

7. A light for a vehicle comprising:

a visible light source adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for generating visible light creating warning signals which are viewed by observers remote from the vehicle;

a dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle adjacent to the visible light source;

said dichroic element adapted to transmit at least some of the visible light generated by the light source such that the transmitted light provides a first warning light signal within a first wavelength range when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle;

said dichroic element adapted to reflect at least some of the visible light generated by the light source such that the reflected light provides a second warning light signal within a second wavelength range different than the first wavelength range when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

8. The light of claim 7 further comprising a light bar adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and wherein the visible light source and the dichroic element are adapted to be mounted on the light bar.

9. The light of claim 7 wherein the dichroic element comprises a substrate having a dichroic coating which has an orientation to minimize variations in transmitivity as the angle of incidence of light impinging on the coating varies.

The light of claim 7 further comprising an absorptive filter and a beam forming reflector having a focal point coincident with the visible light source such that the reflector reflects a beam of light, said dichroic element positioned with respect to the beam forming reflector to intersect at least a portion of the beam of light to create a reflected beam and said absorptive filter positioned with respect to the dichroic element to intersect at least a portion of the reflected beam.

The light of claim 7 further comprising an absorptive filter and a beam forming reflector having a focal point coincident with the visible light source such that the reflector reflects a beam of light, said absorptive filter and said dichroic element each positioned with respect to the beam forming element to intersect at least a portion of the beam of light.

The light of claim 7 wherein the dichroic element comprises a beam forming element forming a beam of light, said beam forming element having a focal point coincident with the light source so that the first warning light signal is radially radiating from the light source and the second warning light signal is the beam of light formed by the beam forming element.

13. The light of claim 12 wherein an additional dichroic element or an absorptive filter is positioned to intersect at least a portion of the beam of light.

14. The light of claim 7 wherein the dichroic element has a first surface having a first dichroic coating thereon and a second surface non-parallel to the first surface having a second dichroic coating thereon.

15. The light of claim 7 wherein the dichroic element has lens elements for redirecting the transmitted or reflected light.

The light of claim 7 further comprising a beam forming reflector having a focal point coincident with the visible light source such that the reflector reflects a beam of light, said dichroic element positioned with respect to the beam forming reflector to intersect at least a portion of the beam of light, and a mirror positioned with respect to the dichroic element to reflect the second warning light signal.

17. The light of claim 16 wherein the mirror is parallel to the dichroic element so that the first and second signals are beams directed in the same direction parallel to each other.

18. The light of claim 16 wherein the mirror is perpendicular to the dichroic element so that the first and second signals are beams directed in opposite directions parallel to each other.

The light of claim 7 further comprising an additional dichroic element positioned with respect to the first beam forming element to transmit at least some of the second warning light signal and to reflect at least some of the second warning light signal so that the transmitted second warning light signal provides the second warning light signal when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle and so that the reflected second warning light signal provides a third warning light signal when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

20. The light of claim 7 further comprising an absorptive filtering mirror positioned with respect to the dichroic element to reflect at least one of the warning light signals.

21. The light of claim 7 wherein the dichroic element comprises a reflective filter.

22. A light for a vehicle comprising:

a visible light source adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for generating visible light creating warning signals which are viewed by observers remote from the vehicle;

a dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle adjacent to the visible light source, said dichroic element adapted to transmit at least some of the visible light generated by the light source, said dichroic element adapted to reflect at least some of the visible light generated by the light source;

the transmitted light adapted to provide a first warning light signal having a first color when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle; and

the reflected light adapted to provide a second warning light signal having a second color different than the first color when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle.

23. The light of claim 22 wherein the dichroic element comprises a reflective filter.

24. A light for a vehicle comprising:

a visible light source adapted to be mounted on the vehicle for generating visible light creating warning signals which are viewed by observers remote from the vehicle;

a dichroic element adapted to be mounted on the vehicle and positioned adjacent to the visible light source, wherein said dichroic element is a beam forming element reflecting at least some of the visible light generated by the light source to form a beam of reflected light, said beam forming element having a focal point coincident with the light source, said dichroic element adapted to transmit at least some of the visible light generated by the light source;

the transmitted light radially radiating from the light source and adapted to be viewed by the remote observers adapted to provide a first warning light signal within a first wavelength range when viewed by an observer remote from the vehicle; and

the reflected light beam adapted to be viewed by remote observers adapted to provide a second warning light signal within a second wavelength range different than the first wavelength range.

25. The light of claim 24 wherein the dichroic element comprises a first dichroic element and further comprising a second dichroic element positioned adjacent the first dichroic element to intersect at least a portion of the reflected light beam.

26. The light of claim 25 wherein the first and second elements are on a base and further comprising means for rotating the base.

The light of claim 25 wherein the second dichroic element comprises a second beam forming element having a focal point coincident with the light source and coincident with the first focal point of the first beam forming element and wherein the second reflected light signal comprises a second reflected light beam whereby the first reflected light signal provides a first warning light signal when viewed by observers remote from the vehicle and whereby the second reflected light signal provides a second warning light signal when viewed by observers remote from the vehicle.

28. The light of claim 25 wherein the first and second dichroic elements are in opposed relation to each other and wherein the first and second dichroic elements are in registry with each other.

29. The light of claim 25 further comprising a coating at least partially surrounding the light source, said coating having a first portion reflecting light toward the first dichroic element and having a second portion reflecting light toward the second dichroic element.

30. The light of claim 25 further comprising a third beam forming dichroic element having a third focal point coincident with the light source and the first and second focal points and wherein the first, second and third beam forming elements are contiguous to each other.

The light of claim 25 further comprising a third beam forming dichroic element having a third focal point coincident with the light source and the first and second focal points, a fourth beam forming dichroic element having a fourth focal point coincident with the light source and the first, second and third focal points and wherein the first and third elements are in opposed relation to each other and the second and fourth elements are in opposed relation to each other.

32. The light of claim 31 wherein the first element is contiguous to the second and fourth elements and the third element is contiguous to the second and fourth elements and wherein the first and third elements are in registration with each other and the second and fourth elements are in registration with each other.
