Abstract

Methods and compositions are described for treating contaminants in material intended for in vivo use, and in particular blood and blood products for human use. Contaminants in blood cell preparations are inactivated prior to long term storage and transfusion. Inactivation is accomplished using a device having a unique temperature control design.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

i) a source of electromagnetic radiation comprising a bulb having first and second ends and a middle region;

ii) a blood bag support configured such that at least a portion of said electromagnetic radiation from said bulbs contacts a blood bag when positioned on said support; and

iii) a means for preventing said contact of electromagnetic radiation from at least a portion of each of said first and second ends.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said means comprises a first lip which wraps around the first end of said bulb and a second lip which wraps around said second end of said bulb.

3. The device of claim 2, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

5. The device of claim 2, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

7. The device of claim 6, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

9. The device of claim 2, wherein the device further comprises a shaker.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the shaker is configured to provide a horizontal motion to the blood bag support.

11. The device of claim 9, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

13. The device of claim 9, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

14. The device of claim 13, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

15. The device of claim 14, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

17. The device of claim 15, wherein said blood bag support is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

18. The device of claim 15, wherein said source comprises a plurality of tubular bulbs arranged in parallel with the ends of the bulbs aligned to form a first bank of said bulbs.

19. The device of claim 18, further comprising a second bank of said bulbs.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the first bank is positioned above the blood bag support and the second bank is positioned beneath the blood bag support.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein said blood bag support is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

22. The device of claim 15, further comprising a first fan configured to circulate air contacting the blood bag support.

23. The device of claim 22, further comprising a heat exchanger configured to cool the air circulated by the first fan.

24. The device of claim 22, further comprising a second fan configured to circulate air across the bulb, thereby cooling the bulb.

25. The device of claim 22, wherein said blood bag support is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

26. The device of claim 22, wherein said source comprises a plurality of tubular bulbs arranged in parallel with the ends of the bulbs aligned to form a first bank of said bulbs.

27. The device of claim 26, further comprising a second bank of said bulbs.

28. The device of claim 27, wherein the first bank is positioned above the blood bag support and the second bank is positioned beneath the blood bag support.

29. The device of claim 28, wherein said blood bag support is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

30. The device of claim 1, wherein the device further comprises a shaker.

31. The device of claim 30, wherein the shaker is configured to provide a horizontal motion to the blood bag support.

32. The device of claim 30, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

33. The device of claim 32, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

34. The device of claim 30, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

35. The device of claim 34, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

36. The device of claim 35, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

37. The device of claim 36, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

38. The device of claim 1, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

39. The device of claim 38, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

40. The device of claim 39, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

41. The device of claim 40, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

42. The device of claim 1, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

43. The device of claim 42, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb.

44. A device, comprising:

i) a source of electromagnetic radiation comprising a bulb having first and second ends and a middle region;

ii) a plate positioned such that at least a portion of said electromagnetic radiation from said bulb contacts a blood bag when placed on said plate; and

iii) an opaque material positioned around each end of the bulb to prevent said contact of electromagnetic radiation from at least a portion of each of said first and second ends.

45. The device of claim 44, wherein the device further comprises a shaker.

46. The device of claim 45, wherein the shaker is configured to provide a horizontal motion to the plate.

47. The device of claim 45, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

48. The device of claim 47, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

49. The device of claim 45, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

50. The device of claim 49, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

51. The device of claim 50, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

52. The device of claim 51, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

53. The device of claim 51, wherein said plate is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

54. The device of claim 51, wherein said source comprises a plurality of tubular bulbs arranged in parallel with the ends of the bulbs aligned to form a first bank of said bulbs.

55. The device of claim 54, further comprising a second bank of said bulbs.

56. The device of claim 55, wherein the first bank is positioned above the plate and the second bank is positioned beneath the plate.

57. The device of claim 56, wherein said plate is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

58. The device of claim 51, further comprising a first fan configured to circulate air contacting the plate.

59. The device of claim 58, further comprising a heat exchanger configured to cool the air circulated by the first fan.

60. The device of claim 58, further comprising a second fan configured to circulate air across the bulbs, thereby cooling the bulbs.

61. The device of claim 58, wherein said plate is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

62. The device of claim 58, wherein said source comprises a plurality of tubular bulbs arranged in parallel with the ends of the bulbs aligned to form a first bank of said bulbs.

63. The device of claim 62, further comprising a second bank of said bulbs.

64. The device of claim 63, wherein the first bank is positioned above the plate and the second bank is positioned beneath the plate.

65. The device of claim 64, wherein said plate is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

66. The device of claim 44, wherein said source is a fluorescent source.

67. The device of claim 66, wherein said contact of electromagnetic radiation further comprises wavelengths between 320 and 400 nm.

68. The device of claim 67, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

69. The device of claim 68, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.

70. The device of claim 69, further comprising a first fan configured to circulate air contacting the plate.

71. The device of claim 70, wherein said source comprises a plurality of tubular bulbs arranged in parallel with the ends of the bulbs aligned to form a first bank of said bulbs.

72. The device of claim 71, further comprising a second bank of said bulbs.

73. The device of claim 72, wherein the first bank is positioned above the plate and the second bank is positioned beneath the plate.

74. The device of claim 73, wherein said plate is dimensioned to permit a plurality of blood bags to be supported for irradiation.

75. The device of claim 44, further comprising multiple light output detectors positioned to measure the output of the bulb.

76. The device of claim 75, wherein the output detectors are wired to shut off the bulb when a desired output level has been reached.
