1. A method for dialing an emergency number from a client coupled to a remote network via the PSTN, said client including a dialable telephone and said remote network including a remote PBX/MLTS through which said dialable telephone makes phone calls when connected to said PBX/MLTS via the PSTN, said method comprising the steps of:

  • a) monitoring the network connection for the presence of dialed digits from the dialable telephone;

    b) comparing the dialed digits to a predefined sequence of tones corresponding to the emergency number;

    c) disconnecting the client from the remote network;

    d) coupling the client to the PSTN; and

    e) dialing the emergency number.
