1. A method for stimulating a body function, comprising the steps of:

  • characterizing the conductivity of body tissue in a region inside the body in which a source for stimulating the body function is known to exist, said conductivity varying as a function of spatial coordinates;

    causing the body function to occur;

    measuring a first potential distribution over a surface proximate said region that is responsive to said step of applying and thereby indicative of the body function;

    employing the result of said steps of characterizing and measuring to locate a source for the body function within said region;

    employing the result of said steps of characterizing to determine a second potential distribution to be applied over said surface for stimulating said source.
