Method for localizing electrical activity in the body
First Claim
1. A method for stimulating a body function, comprising the steps of:
- characterizing the conductivity of body tissue in a region inside the body in which a source for stimulating the body function is known to exist, said conductivity varying as a function of spatial coordinates;
causing the body function to occur;
measuring a first potential distribution over a surface proximate said region that is responsive to said step of applying and thereby indicative of the body function;
employing the result of said steps of characterizing and measuring to locate a source for the body function within said region;
employing the result of said steps of characterizing to determine a second potential distribution to be applied over said surface for stimulating said source.

Abstract
A method for localizing electrical activity in the body. A plurality of electrical devices apply a predetermined current (or voltage) to the surface of the body, and sense voltage (or current). The same electrical devices employed to sense voltage (or current) from sources of electrical activity within the body are also employed to sense voltage (or current) that results from the application of current (or voltage) by the other electrical devices. The voltages (or currents) sensed are used to characterize impedance within the body as well as to localize sources of the electrical activity. Magnetic resonance imaging may be used in conjunction with voltages or currents applied to the surface of the body to develop a conductivity model for underlying body tissue. Conductivity models obtained according to the invention may also be used with source localization for stimulating internal body tissue at a precise location.

2. A method for determining the conductivity of selected body tissue as a function of spatial coordinates, comprising the steps of
(a) applying a potential distribution to a surface of the body proximate said body tissue so as to cause a current to flow in the tissue that varies as a function of the spatial coordinates; -
(b) imaging the body tissue by use of any means which is responsive to the magnitude of said current as a function of the spatial coordinates, during said step of applying;
(c) imaging the body tissue by use of said means at some time other than during said step of applying;
(d) comparing the results of said steps (b) and (c) to emphasize the effect on said step (c) of current flowing in the tissue; and
(e) using the results of step (d) to obtain an estimate of the conductivity. - View Dependent Claims (3)
