1. A non-removable fastener assembly for aircraft panels having a threaded pin and nut, said nut comprising:
- a generally circular base portion having an outer periphery defined by a pair of first and second spaced edges, said first edge being at the terminal end of said base portion and the second edge being spaced therefrom;
an intermediate generally smooth walled tapered main body portion extending from the second edge of said outer periphery of said base portion adjacent said tapered main body portion to a generally circular terminal end portion, said circular end portion being lesser in outer diameter than the outer diameter of said base portion, said end portion also having an outer periphery defined by a pair of first and second spaced edges, said first edge being at the terminal end of said end portion spaced from said terminal end of said base portion and said second edge of said end portion being spaced from the first edge of said end portion, said tapered main body portion extending to the second edge of said end portion adjacent said tapered main body portion;
a throughbore extending through said nut, said throughbore being threaded at least at said end portion with threads adapted to mate with the threads of said pin;
said main body portion of said nut having an outer periphery with a plurality of spaced cutout areas extending about the periphery thereof, said cutout areas being adapted to provide a gripping surface for an installation tool; and
said main body portion being generally smooth and free of protuberances from the second edge of said base portion to the second edge of said end portion, said spaced cut-out areas being defined by a first elongated side adjacent said second edge of said base portion from which said body portion extends and by a second elongated side spaced from said first elongated side spaced from the edge of said end portion to which said body portion extends, said cut-out areas being further defined by spaced side walls interconnecting said first and second elongated sides forming said cut-out areas between said side walls and said first and second elongated sides with arcuate areas of said body portion between said side walls, each of said arcuate areas having a first end connected to one of said side walls and a second end connected to the other of said side walls, said side walls being straight and linear and extending generally normal to the ends of said arcuate areas.

Abstract
Apparatus and method for forming a pin and nut fastener assembly for temporarily or permanently securing two panels having conventional drilled generally aligned holes into which the assembly is inserted. Weight of the pin and nut is reduced while retaining predetermined industry established strength requirements. The thread section of the pin is reduced along with the mating thread of the nut. The pin may be cold-worked in critical areas.
