1. In a time division multiple access cellular telephone system including a base station and at least one mobile station, wherein the base station and the mobile station are operative to communicate via a communications link over which a series of frames are transmitted, a method for increasing the number of mobile users with which the base station can communicate, comprising:

  • a. dividing a first frame into a plurality of time slots so that there are twice as many time slots as in a conventional frame;

    b. allocating at least two non-adjacent slots to the mobile station; and

    c. transmitting voice data in a half rate mode to the mobile station by dividing the voice data among the at least two non-adjacent time slots.
