Abstract

This device is an apparatus for endovascular occlusion through the formation of thrombi in arteries, veins, aneurysms, vascular malformations, and arteriovenous fistulas. In particular, the device includes multiple vaso-occlusive members connected by electrolytically disintegratible links. Each link connects to the vaso-occlusive member by electrically insulative and conductive joints on opposite ends of the link. The vaso-occlusive members are delivered through a delivery catheter having on its distal end an electrode for electrical contact with the vaso-occlusive member. Upon application of an electrical current through the electrode to the vaso-occlusive member and its conductive joint to the electrolytically disintegratible link, the link disintegrates, selectively detaching the desired number of vaso-occlusive members into the target thrombus formation site.

Claims

1. An assembly for use in the formation of an occlusion comprising:

a series of connected occlusive members, wherein two adjacent members of said series are detachably connected to each other via a joint wherein a selected number of said series of occlusive members may be detached upon application of energy to said joint wherein detachment of said occlusive members does not require withdrawal of a delivery wire.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said joint comprises an electrolytically disintegratable link coated with an insulative layer containing a groove, said groove exposing said underlying link.

3. The assembly of claim 2 wherein said insulative layer comprises a polymer.

4. The assembly of claim 2 wherein said wherein said joint comprises a conductive portion located proximal to said grove, said conductive portion providing an electrical connection with said link.

5. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said joint comprises an insulative portion located distal to said grove, said insulative portion electrically isolating said link from distal occlusive members.

6. The assembly of claim 5 wherein the insulative portion comprises an electrically insulative biocompatible adhesive.

7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said occlusive member comprises a coil.

8. An assembly for use in the formation of an occlusion comprising:

a plurality of distinct tubular members sequentially connected to one another wherein a selected number of said tubular members may be deployed upon application of energy to a link separating said tubular members wherein deployment of said tubular members does not require withdrawal of a delivery wire.

9. The assembly of claim 8 wherein said link is electrolytically disintegratible.

10. The assembly of claim 9 wherein said link is coated with an insulative layer containing a groove, said groove exposing said underlying link.

11. The assembly of claim 10 wherein said insulative layer comprises a polymer.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein each of said tubular members comprises an insulative portion located distal to said groove, said insulative portion electrically isolating said link from distal occlusive members.

13. The assembly of claim 12 wherein each of said tubular members comprises a conductive portion located proximal to said grove, said conductive portion providing an electrical connection with said link.

14. The assembly of claim 9 wherein said tubular member is a coil.

15. A method for occluding a body cavity, comprising:

manipulating at least one vaso-occlusive member of an assembly into said body cavity, said assembly comprising a plurality of vaso-occlusive members connected to one another in sequence; and

applying energy to a link separating said at least one vaso-occlusive member from other vaso-occlusive members in said assembly such that said at least one vaso-occlusive member of said assembly detaches into said body cavity wherein detachment of said at least one vaso-occlusive member does not require withdrawal of a delivery wire.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said applying energy comprises applying an electric current to an electrically severable region between said vaso-occlusive members.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein said assembly is disposed at least partially into said body cavity through a catheter distal end, said catheter having a distal electrode.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said catheter additionally comprises a radiopaque marker.

19. The method of claim 15 additionally comprising the step of applying a positive electric current to said assembly prior to electrolytically disintegrating said link to form a thrombus within said body cavity.

20. The method of claim 15 wherein said body cavity comprises an aneurysm.

21. An assembly for use in the formation of an occlusion comprising:

a series of connected occlusive members, wherein two adjacent members of said series are detachably connected to each other via an electrolytically disintegratable link coated with an insulative layer containing a groove, said groove exposing said underlying link, wherein a selected number of said series of occlusive members may be detached upon application of energy to said joint.

22. An assembly for use in the formation of an occlusion comprising:

a plurality of tubular members sequentially connected to one another wherein a selected number of said tubular members may be deployed upon application of energy to a link separating said tubular members, wherein said link is coated with an insulative layer containing a groove, said groove exposing said underlying link.
