Abstract

An electric motor assembly comprises a housing and a spindle disposed to rotate in the housing. A motor is provided which comprises a stator coupled to the housing, and a rotor rotatably disposed within the stator such that the rotor is disposed about the spindle. The assembly further includes an output driver, and a gear system operably coupled to the rotor and the output driver to rotate the output driver upon operation of the motor.

Claims

1. A motorized cycle comprising:

a frame having a bottom bracket, wherein the frame is adapted to be coupled to at least one wheel;

a motor assembly disposed within the bottom bracket, the motor assembly comprising a spindle disposed to rotate within the bottom bracket, and a motor that is coaxially disposed about the spindle;

a first sprocket assembly coupled to the motor that is adapted to be coupled to a chain, and wherein the chain is adapted to be coupled to a second sprocket assembly that is coupled to the wheel to rotate the wheel upon operation of the motor;

a throttle; and

a controller electrically coupled to the throttle and the motor, wherein operation of the throttle sends a signal to the controller to control operation of the motor, and wherein the controller is configured to permit high current levels during acceleration and then to taper the current back to a programmed level over a short time after initial acceleration.

2. A cycle as in claim 1, wherein the frame defines a cavity, and further comprising a battery housed within the cavity, the battery being electrically coupled to the motor.

3. A cycle as in claim 1, wherein the second sprocket assembly includes multiple gears, and further comprising a shifting mechanism to move the chain between the gears and a controller to control actuation of the shifting mechanism.

4. A cycle as in claim 3, wherein the shifting mechanism comprises a derailleur and a cable coupled to the derailleur, and further comprising a motor to tension the cable based on signals received from the controller.

5. A cycle as in claim 1, further comprising a swing arm pivotally coupled to the frame, with the wheel being attached to the swing arm, and a suspension mechanism disposed between the swing arm and the frame, and wherein the motor assembly and the bottom bracket are disposed in the swing arm.

6. A cycle as in claim 1, further comprising a handlebar, and a display coupled to the controller that is disposed near the handlebar.

7. A cycle as in claim 6, wherein the display is configured to display operating parameters of the bicycle, and further includes means for controlling operating functions of the bicycle using the controller.

8. A cycle as in claim 7, further comprising a headlight operably coupled to the frame, and wherein the means for controlling operating functions is configured to permit the operation of the headlight.

9. A cycle as in claim 2, wherein the controller is disposed in the cavity.

10. A cycle as in claim 2, further comprising a recharger disposed in the cavity.

11. A cycle as in claim 2, wherein the frame includes an opening at a bottom end that leads to the cavity, and wherein the battery is insertable into the cavity through the opening.

12. A cycle as in claim 11, wherein the battery is positioned above and in front of the bottom bracket.

13. A cycle as in claim 2, further comprising a power cord retraction mechanism coupled to the frame.

14. A cycle as in claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to monitor and control motor current.

15. A cycle as in claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to provide higher current levels to the motor during acceleration to provide higher acceleration torque.

16. A cycle as in claim 1, wherein the controller is further configured to limit the current to the programmed level until a signal from the throttle indicates that high current is required for high acceleration.

17. A cycle as in claim 1, further comprising a thermal sensor mounted in the motor and electrically coupled to the controller, and wherein the controller is configured to monitor the temperature of the motor and adjust the current in the motor to prevent overheating of the motor.

18. An electric motorized bicycle, comprising:

a frame that is adapted to be coupled to a front wheel;

a swing arm operably coupled to the frame, wherein the swing arm is adapted to be coupled to a rear wheel, and wherein the swing arm includes a bottom bracket;

an electric motor assembly disposed within the bottom bracket, wherein the electric motor assembly comprises a spindle disposed to rotate within the bottom bracket, a motor that is coaxially disposed about the spindle; and

a first sprocket assembly coupled to the motor that is adapted to be coupled to a chain, wherein the chain is adapted to be coupled to a second sprocket assembly of the rear wheel such that operation of the motor is adapted to rotate the rear wheel with the chain.

A bicycle as in claim 18, wherein the motor assembly further comprises a stator coupled to the bottom bracket and a rotor rotatably disposed within the stator such that the rotor is disposed about the spindle, an output driver, and a gear system operably coupled to the rotor and the output driver to rotate the output driver upon operation of the motor, and wherein the first sprocket assembly is coupled to the output driver such that the sprocket assembly rotates upon rotation of the output driver.

20. A bicycle as in claim 18, wherein the frame defines a cavity, and further comprising a battery housed within the cavity, the battery being electrically coupled to the motor.

A bicycle as in claim 18, wherein the second sprocket assembly includes multiple gears, and further comprising a shitting, mechanism to move the chain between the gears and a controller to control actuation of the shifting mechanism based on the rotational wheel speed and the rotational speed of the first sprocket assembly.

22. A bicycle as in claim 21, wherein the shifting mechanism comprises a derailer and a cable coupled to the derailer, and further comprising a motor to tension the cable based on signals received from the controller.

23. A bicycle as in claim 18, further comprising a throttle to control the speed of the motor.

24. A bicycle as in claim 18, wherein the swing arm is pivotally coupled to the frame, and a suspension mechanism disposed between the swing arm and the frame.

25. A bicycle as in claim 18, further comprising at least one crank arm coupled to the spindle.

26. A bicycle as in claim 18, further comprising a handlebar coupled to the frame and a means for controlling the speed of the motor mounted on the handlebar.

27. A bicycle as in claim 18, further comprising a controller electrically coupled to the motor, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the motor to optimize the efficiency of the motor.

28. A bicycle as in claim 26, further comprising a controller electrically coupled to the motor, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the motor, and a display coupled to the controller that is disposed near the handlebar.

29. A bicycle as in claim 28, wherein the display is configured to display operating parameters of the bicycle, and further includes means for controlling operating functions of the bicycle using the controller.

30. A bicycle as in claim 29, further comprising a headlight operably coupled to the frame, and wherein the means for controlling operating functions is configured to permit the operation of the headlight.

31. A bicycle as in claim 18, wherein the frame includes a cavity.

32. A bicycle as in claim 31, further comprising a battery pack disposed in the cavity.

33. A bicycle as in claim 31, further comprising a controller for controlling operation of the motor, and wherein the controller is disposed in the cavity.

34. A bicycle as in claim 32, further comprising a recharger disposed in the cavity.

35. A bicycle as in claim 32, wherein the frame includes an opening at a bottom end that leads to the cavity, and wherein the battery pack is insertable into the cavity through the opening.

36. A bicycle as in claim 32, wherein the battery pack is positioned above and in front of the bottom bracket.

37. A bicycle as in claim 34, further comprising a power cord retraction mechanism coupled to the frame.

38. A motorized cycle comprising:

a frame having a bottom bracket, wherein the frame is adapted to be coupled to at least one wheel;

a motor assembly disposed within the bottom bracket, the motor assembly comprising a spindle disposed to rotate within the bottom bracket, and a motor that is coaxially disposed about the spindle;

a first sprocket assembly coupled to the motor that is adapted to be coupled to a chain, and wherein the chain is adapted to be coupled to a second sprocket assembly that is coupled to the wheel to rotate the wheel upon operation of the motor, wherein the second sprocket assembly includes a plurality of gears;

a set of pedals; and

a gear shifter that is operable to move the chain between the gears;

wherein the motor is configured to turn the front sprocket assembly without turning the pedals such that when the cycle is coasting the chain is movable from a higher one of the gears to a lower one of the gears after the rider manually moves the gear shifter and without the rider turning the pedals.

39. A motorized cycle comprising:

a frame having a bottom bracket, wherein the frame is adapted to be coupled to at least one wheel;

a motor assembly disposed within the bottom bracket, the motor assembly comprising a spindle disposed to rotate within the bottom bracket, and a motor that is coaxially disposed about the spindle;

a first sprocket assembly coupled to the motor that is adapted to be coupled to a chain, and wherein the chain is adapted to be coupled to a second sprocket assembly that is coupled to the wheel to rotate the wheel upon operation of the motor, wherein the second sprocket assembly includes multiple gears;

a throttle;

a controller electrically coupled to the throttle and the motor; and

a shifting mechanism that is adapted to move the chain between the gears, and wherein the controller is configured to control actuation of the shifting mechanism.
