A measurement device for generating an arterial pressure-indicative signal and an arterial volume-indicative signal that are used by a processor in concert with a external pressure-application device and a pressure transducer to determine the blood pressure of a patient by finding a time when the transmural pressure is approximately equal to zero, the measurement device comprising:
- a tonometer placed sufficiently near a measurement site on a patient to detect a first signal indicative of arterial pressure of the patient; and
a plethysmograph placed sufficiently near the measurement site to detect a second signal indicative of arterial volume of the patient.

Abstract
A blood pressure can be obtained by supplying an external pressure to a portion of an artery. The external pressure is preferably between the systolic and diastolic pressure. An event which occurs at least once a cycle can then be identified. This event can be, for example, a peak in the arterial compliance that occurs at a transmural pressure approximately equal to zero. A pair of signals, one that is an arterial volume-indicating signal, and one that is an arterial pressure-indicating signal can be used to identify this event. Alternately, a small signal high-frequency exciter component can be placed upon the pressure or volume of the artery and detected to determine the time that the transmural pressure is equal to zero.

6. A method of determining the blood pressure of a patient from an arterial pressure-indicative signal and an arterial volume-indicative signal, the method comprising:

sampling a tonometer to determine a first signal indicative of arterial pressure of the patient;
sampling a plethysmograph to determine a second signal indicative of arterial volume of the patient;
correlating the first and second signals; and
determining from the correlation when the transmural pressure is about zero, thereby generating a measurement of the blood pressure. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)
determining a mathematical model to represent the correlated first and second signals; and
calculating a maxima of the derivative of the mathematical model, wherein the value of the first signal at the maxima corresponds, to the transmural pressure and the measurement of the blood pressure of the patient.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the determining when the transmural pressure is about zero comprises:

determining a lime corresponding to the greatest rate of change in the correlated first and second signals; and
determining an amount of externally applied pressure at the determined time.
