- a base portion for movement along a surface;
a suction nozzle associated with said base portion;
a brush assembly associated with said base portion and driven by a brush motor;
a lifting mechanism for moving said brush assembly relative to said suction nozzle from a first position wherein the brush assembly is off said surface to a second position wherein the brush assembly is on said surface; and
a switching assembly responsive to the brush lifting mechanism to energize said brush motor when said brush assembly is in said second position.

A floor cleaning device includes a base portion for movement along a surface. The base portion further includes a suction nozzle and a brush assembly driven by a brush motor for agitating the surface. The brush assembly includes a lifting mechanism for moving the brush assembly from a first position wherein the brush is off the surface to a second position wherein the brush assembly is on the surface. A switching assembly is responsive to the brush lifting mechanism to energize the brush motor when the brush assembly is in the second position.

a nozzle lifting mechanism operatively connected to said base portion for raising said suction nozzle off of the surface; and

a brush assembly associated with said base portion, said brush assembly comprising a plurality of vertical axis brushes, each of said brushes configured as a spur gear having gear teeth wherein the gear teeth of each said brush drivingly intermesh with the gear teeth of adjacent said brushes, wherein each of said brushes comprise a first group of bristles extending a first distance radially outward from said vertical axis and a second group of bristles being formed in the center of each brush and extending a second distance radially outward from said vertical axis. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24)
