1. A cellular telephone system comprising:

  • a system of cells, each cell comprising a radio base station, and a cellular telephone call switching system for routing calls to radio base stations, and, thus, to mobile telephones in radio communication with the radio base stations, wherein an additional communication path between the mobile telephone and the switching system is provided, the additional communication path including interface means to provide a switched connection between the mobile telephone and the cellular telephone call switching system so as to by-pass the radio frequency circuitry and antenna of the mobile telephone, the additional communication path having a dedicated channel in the switching system, not associated with a radio frequency channel, for connection of calls to and from a mobile telephone, wherein the interface means comprises a modem that provides a communications connection to the mobile telephone for baseband speech and control data signals, and wherein the communications path comprises a switched network.
