A method for selecting one of first and second phase shiftable camshafts in a variable camshaft timing engine, said first and second camshafts controlling air flow communicating with said first and second cylinders, respectively, of said engine, said engine further including a crankshaft being driven by first and second pistons within said first and second cylinders, respectively, said method comprising:

  • determining which of said first and second camshafts is moving at a faster rate of movement toward a first scheduled phase angle with respect to said crankshaft; and

    , selecting one of said first and second camshafts having said faster rate of movement for reducing engine torque fluctuations.
