Apparatus and method for surgical fastening
First Claim
1. A fastening apparatus for use in endoscopic surgery comprising:
- a handle portion;
a triggering mechanism at least partially positioned in the handle;
at least one fastener having a back and two legs in a first configuration; and
a fastener applicator connected to the handle portion and defining a longitudinal axis, the fastener applicator including a proximal end, a distal end, an anvil and a shaping slide, the anvil having a proximally oriented face having a single proximally extending point and communicating with said point, a pair of opposed distally extending planar surfaces, the shaping slide having a distally oriented face having a notch configured for receiving the point of the anvil, the slide being adapted for driving the fastener onto the anvil, the slide and the anvil being adapted to shape the back of the fastener to modify the fastener from the first configuration to a second configuration.

Abstract
Apparatus and methods for applying fasteners during endoscopic surgery. The apparatus generally comprises a handle portion, a triggering mechanism and a fastener applicator. One embodiment of the invention forms the fastener around a single focal point on an anvil. Another embodiment vertically stacks the fasteners in a fastener applicator which is readily detachable from the handle portion by virtue of a rotational locking system and which may be replaced with a new fastener applicator having a fresh load of vertically stacked fasteners. The various embodiments may be variously combined together in a single device. The methods generally include the following steps: forming a fastener by placing it over a single focal point anvil and pressing the fastener against the single focal point anvil using a slide.

10. A fastening apparatus for use in endoscopic surgery comprising:
-
a handle portion;
a triggering mechanism at least partially positioned in the handle;
a plurality of fasteners in a first configuration wherein each fastener has a back having a width and two legs, the plurality of fasteners being stored in the apparatus in the first configuration;
an anvil; and
a fastener applicator connected to the handle, the fastener applicator having a distal end and including a single shaping slide, a single anvil and the plurality of fasteners, the shaping slide being cooperable with the anvil to form a single bend in the back of the fasteners, the shaping slide being configured to drive a distal most fastener of the plurality of fasteners against the anvil and to thereby form from the width of the back of the distal most fastener in its first configuration, a fastener in a second configuration whose back has a single bend. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A method of fastening a surgical fastener in endoscopic surgery comprising the steps of:
-
providing a surgical fastener apparatus having a triggering mechanism, an anvil, a shaping slide movable in respect to actuation of the triggering mechanism, and a plurality of fasteners, each fastener in a first configuration having a back and two legs, the slide and the anvil being adapted to shape from the back of the distal most fastener in its first configuration, the back of the distal most fastener in a second configuration having a single bend;
placing the anvil in close proximity with a surgical target; and
actuating the triggering mechanism to drive the slide to deploy the distal most fastener. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22)
