1. A sealed back pressure device for assisting a respiratory function of a patient, comprising:

  • an elongated hollow body having a first normally open end, a second normally closed end, an intake port formed through a wall of the hollow body and an exhalation port formed through the wall of the hollow body a distance from said intake port for communicating interior of the hollow body with the atmosphere;

    a one-way exhalation valve mounted inside the hollow body for allowing exhaust gas to be exhaled through the exhalation port;

    a compression spring mounted between the exhalation valve and the closed end for regulating resistance to gas flow being exhaled by the patient; and

    a means mounted on the second end of the hollow body for adjusting compression of the spring.
