Abstract

A combustible gas sensor includes an active element in electrical connection with a measurement circuit. The measurement circuit includes a thermistor network to compensate for the effect of changes in ambient temperature to the resistance of the active element. Another combustible gas sensor includes an active element having a geometric surface area no greater than approximately 0.5 mm² in electrical connection with a measurement circuit. The measurement circuit includes a compensator that compensates for the effect of changes in ambient temperature to the resistance of the active element without compensating for heat lost by thermal conduction from the active element. A method of sensing gas including the steps of: (i) providing a catalytic active element having a geometric surface area sufficiently small such that the effect upon the output of the active element of heat lost from the active element by thermal conduction is relatively small, and (ii) compensating for only the effect of changes in ambient temperature upon the output of the active element.

Claims

1. A combustible gas sensor comprising:

a catalytically active element in electrical connection with a measurement circuit, the measurement circuit including a thermistor network to compensate for the effect of changes in ambient temperature to the resistance of the catalytically active element and wherein the geometric surface area of the catalytically active element is no greater than approximately 0.5 mm².

2. The combustible gas sensor of claim 1 wherein the geometric surface area of the catalytically active element is no greater than approximately 0.3 mm².

20. The combustible gas sensor of claim 1 wherein heat loss from thermal conduction is less than approximately 10% of the heat generated by a reaction catalyzed at the catalytically active element at full scale.

3. A measurement circuit for use in a combustible gas sensor, the measurement circuit comprising:

a catalytically active element in electrical connection with a thermistor network adapted to compensate for the effect of changes in ambient temperature to the resistance of the catalytically active element without compensating for heat lost by thermal conduction from the catalytically active element and wherein the geometric surface area of the catalytically active element is no greater than approximately 0.5 mm².

4. The measurement circuit of claim 3 wherein the geometric surface area of the catalytically active element is no greater than approximately 0.3 mm².

5. The measurement circuit of claim 3 wherein heat loss from thermal thermal conduction is less than approximately 10% of the heat generated by a reaction catalyzed at the catalytically active element at full scale.

6. A combustible gas sensor comprising:

a catalytically active element having a geometric surface area no greater than approximately 0.5 mm² in electrical connection with a measurement circuit, the measurement circuit including a compensator that compensates for the effect of changes in ambient temperature to the resistance of the catalytically active element without compensating for heat lost by thermal conduction from the catalytically active element.

7. The combustible gas sensor of claim 6 wherein the compensator includes a thermistor.

8. The combustible gas sensor of claim 6 wherein the compensator includes a sensor for measuring ambient temperature in communication with processor circuitry.

15. The combustible gas sensor of claim 6 wherein the catalytically active element has a geometric surface area no greater than approximately 0.3 mm².

16. The combustible gas sensor of claim 15 wherein the compensator includes a thermistor.

17. The combustible gas sensor of claim 15 wherein the compensator includes a sensor for measuring ambient temperature in communication with processor circuitry.

18. The combustible gas sensor of claim 15 wherein the sensor is operated in a temperature range of approximately 400°

C. to approximately 600°

C.

19. The sensor of claim 6 wherein the sensor is operated in a temperature range of approximately 400°

C. to approximately 600°

C.

9. A method of sensing gas comprising the steps of:

providing a catalytic active element having a geometric surface area sufficiently small such that the effect upon the output of the active element of heat lost from the active element by thermal conduction is relatively small, and compensating for only the effect of changes in ambient temperature upon the output of the active element.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein heat loss from thermal conduction is less than approximately 10% of the heat generated by a reaction catalyzed at the active element at full scale.

11. A method of claim 9 wherein the geometric surface area of the active element is no greater than approximately 0.5 mm².

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the geometric surface area of the active element is no greater than approximately 0.3 mm².

13. The method of claim 9 wherein the heat loss from thermal conduction is less than approximately 5% of the heat generated by a reaction catalyzed at the active element at full scale.

14. The method of claim 9 wherein the heat loss from thermal conduction is less than approximately 3% of the heat generated by a reaction catalyzed at the active element at full scale.
