Abstract

A method and system for enabling handwritten note taking and retrieval, whereby a user is able to electronically capture, manage and search notes handwritten on paper by the user using one or more forms printed on paper and using a sensing device which senses coded data included in the printed forms.

Claims

1. A method of supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing:

information relating to a notebook activity;

coded data indicative of an identity of the form and of a plurality of reference points of the form, the information and coded data of the form having been printed substantially simultaneously, the method including the steps of;

receiving, in a computer system, indicating data from a sensing device operated by the user, the indicating data being indicative of the identity of the form and of a position of the sensing device relative to the form, the indicating data having been generated by the sensing device using at least some of the coded data it sensed when placed in an operative position relative to the form; and

identifying in the computer system, and from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity.

The method of claim 1 in which the at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity is associated with at least one zone of the form, and in which the method includes identifying, in the computer system and from the zone indicated by the position of the sensing device as indicated by the indicating data, the at least one parameter.

The method of claim 2, wherein the indicating data includes movement data indicative of movement of the sensing device relative to the form, the sensing device having generated the movement data using at least some of the coded data, wherein the at least one parameter is identified in the computer system by determining that the movement was at least partially within the at least one zone.

7. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6, in which the parameter is an action parameter of the notebook activity, the method including effecting, in the computer system, an operation in respect of the action parameter.

8. The method of claim 7, in which the action parameter of the notebook activity is selected from the group comprising:

listing a user'"'"'s notebooks;

searching at least one of a user'"'"'s notebooks;

ordering a new notebook;

printing a new notebook;

reprinting at least one notebook page;

printing certification copy of at least one notebook page; and

printing a representation of the history of at least one notebook page.

The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which the parameter is an option parameter of the notebook activity, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the user has entered a hand-drawn mark by means of a sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the option parameter.

10. The method of claim 9 in which the option parameter is associated with at least one of:

a page style; and

a search match return number.

11. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which the parameter is a text parameter of the notebook activity, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the user has entered handwritten text data by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the text parameter.

12. The method of claim 11 which includes converting, in the computer system, the handwritten text data to computer text.

13. The method of claim 11 in which the text parameter is associated with at least one of:

a user'"'"'s name;

a notebook name;

a required number of notebook pages;

a page style;

a notebook page number;

a handwritten notebook entry,

a certification signature;

an item of search text;

a notebook entry date; and

a notebook entry time.

14. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which the parameter is an authorization parameter of the notebook activity, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the user has entered a handwritten signature by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the authorization parameter.

15. The method of claim 14 which includes verifying in the computer system, that the signature is that of the user.

16. The method of claim 14 which includes verifying, in the computer system, that the signature is that of an authorized user.

17. The method of claim 14 in which the authorization parameter is associated with at least one of:

printing a new notebook,

searching at least one of a user'"'"'s notebooks; and

preprinting one or more notebook pages.

The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which the parameter is a graphical parameter of the notebook activity, the method including identifying in the computer system, that the user has entered hand-drawn graphical information by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the graphical parameter.

19. The method of claim 18 in which the graphical parameter is associated with a hand drawn notebook entry.

20. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which at least one of the one or more forms contains information relating to at least one of:

a user'"'"'s notebook menu;

ordering a new notebook;

a notebook name;

a user name;

a notebook page number,

a certifying entity for a notebook page;

a notebook page reference number,

a notebook search;

a notebook list; and

a notebook search result.

21. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6, the surface being a paper page, the method including receiving an instruction from the user to print the page on demand, and printing the page.

22. The method of claim 21 which includes printing the coded data to be substantially invisible in the visible spectrum.

23. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 which includes retaining a retrievable record of each form generated, said form being retrievable using its identity as contained in its coded data.

24. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which said form is a notebook page, the method including retaining a retrievable record of a notebook page at a selected instance in time, said page being retrievable using its identity as contained in its coded data.

25. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which the sensing device contains an identification means which imparts a unique identity to the sensing device and identifies it as being associated with a particular user and in which the method includes monitoring, in the computer system, said identity.

26. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 which includes providing all required information relating to the notebook activity on the at least one form, to eliminate the need for a separate display device.

27. The method of claim 2, 4 or 6 in which said form is provided on multiple pages and in which the method includes binding the pages.

4. A method of supporting a user in a notebook activity using a printed form containing:

information relating to a notebook activity; and

coded data indicative of at least one parameter of the notebook activity, the information coded data of the form having been printed substantially simultaneously, the method including the steps of;

receiving, in a computer system, indicating data from a sensing device operated by the user, the indicating data being indicative of the at least one parameter and of movement of the sensing device relative to the form, the sensing device having generated the indicating data by sensing the coded data when the sensing device was moved relative to the form; and

interpreting, in the computer system, the movement of the sensing device as it relates to the at least one parameter.

5. A method of supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing coded data indicative of an identity of the form, the method including the steps of:

receiving, in a computer system, indicating data from a sensing device;

the indicating data being indicative of an identity of the user and of the identity of the form, the sensing device having determined the indicating data related to the identity of the user using identity data stored in the sensing device and having determined the indicating data relating to the form by sensing at least some of the coded data; and

identifying, in the computer system and from the indicating data, a notebook activity and at least one notebook associated with the user, the notebook activity being executable in relation to the identified notebook.

6. The method of claim 5 which includes receiving, in the computer system, movement data from the sensing device indicative of movement of the sensing device relative to the form, the sensing device having generated the movement data.

28. A system for supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form, the system including:

at least one form printable on a surface, said form containing information relating to a notebook activity and including coded data indicative of the identity of the form and of a plurality of reference points of the form, the information and coded data of the form having been printed substantially simultaneously; and

a computer system for receiving indicating data from a sensing device operated by a user involved in the notebook activity;

said indicating data being indicative of the identity of said form and of a position of the sensing device relative to said form, the indicating data having been generated by the sensing device using at least some means of the coded data, it sensed when placed in an operative position relative to the form said computer system including means for identifying, from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity.

29. The system of claim 28 in which said at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity is associated with at least one zone of said form.

30. The system of claim 29 in which said at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity is associated with at least one zone of said form.

31. The system of claim 28 including the sensing device, the sensing device sensing its movement relative to said form, using at least some of the coded data.

36. The system of claim 28, 32 or 35 in which said at least one parameter of the notebook activity is selected from the group comprising an action parameter of the notebook activity, an option parameter of the notebook activity, a text parameter of the notebook activity, an authorization parameter of the notebook activity, and a graphical parameter of the notebook activity.

37. The system of claim 36 in which the action parameter of the notebook activity is selected from the group comprising:

listing a user'"'"'s notebooks;

searching at least one of a user'"'"'s notebooks;

ordering a new notebook;

printing a new notebook;

reprinting at least one notebook page;

printing certification copy of at least one notebook page; and

printing a presentation of the history of at least one notebook page.

38. The system of claim 36 in which the option parameter is associated with at least one of:

a page style; and

a search match return number.

39. The system of claim 36 in which the text parameter is associated with at least one of:

a user'"'"'s name;

a notebook name;

a required number of notebook pages;

a page style;

a notebook page number;

a handwritten notebook entry;

a certification signature;

an item of search text;

a notebook entry date; and

a notebook entry time.

40. The system of claim 36 in which the authorization parameter is associated with at least one of:

printing a new notebook;

searching at least one of a user'"'"'s notebooks; and

a preprinting one or more notebook pages.

41. The system of claim 36 in which the graphical parameter is associated with a hand drawn notebook entry.

43. The system of claim 28, 32 or 35 in which the sensing device includes a marking nib.

44. The system of claim 28, 32 or 35 in which the sensing device contains an identification means which imparts a unique identity to the sensing device and identifies it as being associated with a particular user.

45. The system of claim 28, 32 or 35 in which the surface is a printed paper page, and in which the system includes a printer for printing said form on the paper page on demand.

46. The system of claim 45 in which the printer prints the coded data at the same time as printing said form on the paper page.

47. The system of claim 45 in which, to cater for a note taking form printed on multiple pages, the printer includes a binding means for binding the pages.

48. The system of claim 28, 32 or 35 in which the coded data is substantially invisible in the visible spectrum.

49. The system of claim 28 or 34 which includes a database for keeping a retrievable record of each form generated, each form being retrievable by using its identity as included in its coded data.

32. A system for supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form the system including:

at least one form printable on an interactive surface, said form containing information relating to a notebook activity and including coded data indicative of at least one parameter of the notebook activity the information and coded data of the form having been printed substantially simultaneously; and

a computer system for receiving indicating data from a sensing device operated by the notebook user, said data the indicating data being indicative of a movement of the sensing device relative to said form, and for interpreting said movement of the sensing device as it relates to said at least one parameter, the sensing device, having generated the indicating data by sensing the coded data when the sensing device was moved relative to said form, and interpreting the movement of the sensing device as it relates to the at least one parameter.

33. The system of claim 32 including the sensing device.

34. A system for supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing coded data indicative of an identity of the form, the system including:

a computer system for receiving indicating data from a sensing device the indicating data being indicative of an identity of a notebook user and of the identity of said form, the sensing device having determined the indicating data related to the identity of the user using identity data stored in the sensing device and having determined the indicating data relating to the form by sensing at least some of the coded data and identifying a notebook activity and at least one notebook associated with the user.

The system of claim 34 in which the coded data is also indicative of at least one parameter of the notebook activity, the computer system receiving indicating data from the sensing device regarding said at least one parameter of the notebook activity, and the sensing device sensing the indicating data using at least some of the coded data.

42. The system of claim 34 including a sensing device, the sensing device sensing its movement relative to the form.

50. A method of supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing:

information relating to the notebook activity;

coded data indicative of an identity of the form and of a plurality of reference points of the form, the information and code data having been printed substantially simultaneously, the method including the steps of;

sensing at least some of the coded data using a sensing device operated by the user;

generating indicating data in the sensing device using the sensed coded data, the indicating data being indicative of the identity of the form and of a position of the sensing device relative to the form; and

transmitting the indicating data to a computer system, which is configured to identify, from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity.

The method of claim 50, wherein the at least one parameter relating to the notebook activity is associated with at least one zone of the form, the computer system being configured to identify the at least one parameter from the zone indicated by the position of the sensing device as indicated by the indicating data.

The method of claim 51, wherein the indicating data includes movement data indicative of movement of the sensing device relative to the form, the method including the step of generating the movement data using at least some of the sensed coded data, the computer system being configured to identify the at least one parameter by determining that the movement was at least partially within the at least one zone.

53. A method of supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing:

information relating to the notebook activity; and

coded data indicative of at least one parameter of the notebook activity, the information and coded data having been printed substantially simultaneously, the method including the steps of;

sensing at least some of the coded data using a sensing device operated by the user;

generating, in the sensing device and using the sensed coded data, indicating data that is indicative of the at least one parameter and of movement of the sensing device relative to the form; and

transmitting the indicating data to a computer system, which is configured to interpret the movement of the sensing device as it relates to the at least one parameter.

54. A method of supporting a user in performing a notebook activity using a printed form containing coded data indicative of an identity of the form, the method including the steps of:

sensing at least some of the coded data using a sensing device operated by the user;

generating, in the sensing device, indicating data that is indicative of an identity of the user and of the identity of the form, the sensing device determining the indicating data related to the identity of the user on the basis of identity data stored in the sensing device and determining the indicating data related to the identity of the form using the sensed coded data; and

transmitting the indicating data to a computer system, which is configured to use the indicating data to identify a notebook activity and at least one notebook associated with the user, the notebook activity being executable in relation to the identified notebook.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the indicating data includes movement data generated by the sensing device, the movement data being indicative of movement of the sensing device relative to the form.
