Abstract

A shape memory material activated device of the present invention uses a shape memory material activator to create a path through a shell wall of the device. The path through the shell wall may release a substance contained in the shell or allow a substance to enter the shell. The path may be created by fracturing, puncturing, exploding, imploding, peeling, tearing, stretching, separating, debonding or otherwise opening the shell. The devices according to the present invention may be used as temperature sensors or warning devices, drug delivery devices, and the like.

Claims

1. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the shape memory material activator creates the path through the shell by converting a shell wall to a permeable wall.

4. The device of claim 1, or 2, wherein the shape memory material activator creates the path through the shell to release the substance from the shell or allow another substance to enter the shell.

5. The device of claim 1, or 2, wherein the shape memory material activator has been deformed from an original memory shape in its martensitic state and returns to the original memory shape upon exposure to a temperature above the predetermined temperature.

6. The device of claim 1, or 2, wherein the shape memory material activator utilizes the shape recovery of the shape memory material to create the path through the shell.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the shape memory material activator acts directly on the shell.

8. The device of claim 1, or 2, further comprising a non-shape memory material mechanical element which creates the path through the shell.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the shape memory material activator releases the non-shape memory material mechanical element.

10. The device of claim 1, or 2, wherein the shape memory material activator is within the shell.

2. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the shell includes a peelable wall and the shape memory material activator peels the peelable wall away from a remainder of the shell.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the peelable wall opens a plurality of shells.

11. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the device provides an indication of a time that the shape memory material activator has been above the predetermined temperature.

12. A drug delivery system comprising:

a shell containing a drug; and

a shape memory material activator for creating a path to deliver the drug from the shell to a patient when a predetermined temperature of the shape memory material activator is achieved, wherein the shell includes a peelable wall and the shape memory material activator peels the peelable wall away from a remainder of the shell.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the device is a transdermal patch and the peeling of the peelable wall allows delivery of a drug to a patient.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the shell contains a plurality of chambers and each of the plurality of chambers contains a drug.

15. The system of claim 12, wherein each of the plurality of chambers contains a different drug.

16. The system of claim 12, wherein the shape memory material activator is within the shell.

17. The system of claim 12, wherein the shape memory material activator is outside the shell.

18. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the path through the shell provides variable release of the substance, wherein the device provides an indication of a time that the shape memory metal activator has been above the predetermined temperature.

19. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the path through the shell provides variable release of the substance, wherein the shape memory material activator creates the path through the shell by converting a shell wall to a permeable wall.

20. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:

a shell containing a substance; and

a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the path through the shell provides variable release of the substance, wherein the shell includes a peelable wall and the shape memory material activator peels the peelable wall away from a remainder of the shell.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the peelable wall opens a plurality of shells.
