Abstract

An electronic locking system is provided wherein an electronic lock'"'"'s restriction of movement of a locked securing member, such as a door latch or bolt, can be selectively overridden from inside a locked enclosure by manual manipulation of a handle. The handle moves the securing member to open a locked barrier even though the electronic lock remains in a locked condition.

Claims

1. An electronic locking system comprising:

(a) an electronic lock having an inner element rotatable about an axis of rotation with respect to an outer element between a locking position and an unlocking position and an electrically-powered locking mechanism operable to selectively impose a restriction on rotation of said inner element with respect to said outer element;

(b) a movable securing member selectively engageable and disengageable controllably by an engagement member with respect to said inner element so as to enable said inner element to selectively restrict movement of said securing member when said restriction on rotation is imposed on said inner element;

(c) a handle connected to said engagement member, manually operable both to move said engagement member and to disengage said engagement member controllably from said inner element; and

(d) said engagement member being movable from engagement with said inner element to disengagement from said inner element by manual operation solely of said handle only when said inner element is in said locking position.

The electronic locking system of claim 1 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to movement of said handle in a predetermined direction, and said securing member is movable in response to movement of said handle in said predetermined direction.

The electronic locking system of claim 1 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to a first incremental movement of said handle in a predetermined direction, and said securing member is movable in response to a subsequent second incremental movement of said handle in said predetermined direction.

The electronic locking system of claim 1 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to movement of said handle in either one of two opposite predetermined directions, and said securing member is movable in response to movement of said handle in either one of said two opposite directions.

The electronic locking system of claim 1 wherein said securing member is controllably engaged by an engagement member which is engaged controllably both by said inner element and by said handle, said engagement member being selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element without thereby disengaging from said securing member and said handle.

6. The electronic locking system of claim 5 wherein said engagement member is selectively engageable controllably by said inner element in only a single angular relationship to said inner element about said axis of rotation.

7. The electronic locking system of claim 5 wherein said engagement member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element by sliding axially with respect to said inner element and with respect to said securing member.

8. The electronic locking system of claim 7 wherein said engagement member is axially slidable with respect to said handle.

9. The electronic locking system of claim 7 wherein said engagement member is yieldably urged against disengagement from said inner element.

10. The electronic locking system of claim 5 wherein said engagement member is supported by said outer element so as to slide axially with respect thereto.

11. An electronic locking system comprising:

(a) an electronic lock having an inner element rotatable about an axis of rotation with respect to an outer element between a locking position and an unlocking position and an electrically-powered locking mechanism operable to selectively impose a restriction on rotation of said inner element with respect to said outer element;

(b) a movable securing member selectively engageable and disengageable controllably with respect to said inner element so as to enable said inner element to selectively restrict movement of said securing member when said restriction on rotation is imposed on said inner element;

(c) a handle connected to said securing member, operable both to move said securing member and to disengage said securing member controllably from said inner element; and

(d) said outer element defining a cam surface that acts on said inner element to return said inner element to said locking position when in said unlocking position.

The electronic locking system of claim 11 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to movement of said handle in a predetermined direction, and said securing member is movable in response to movement of said handle in said predetermined direction.

The electronic locking system of claim 11 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to a first incremental movement of said handle in a predetermined direction, and said securing member is movable in response to a subsequent second incremental movement of said handle in said predetermined direction.

14. The electronic locking system of claim 11 wherein said securing member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element in response to movement of said handle in either one of two opposite predetermined directions, and said securing member is movable in response to movement of said handle in either one of said two opposite directions.

15. The electronic locking system of claim 11 wherein said securing member is controllably engaged by an engagement member which is engaged controllably both by said inner element and by said handle, said engagement member being selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element without thereby disengaging from said securing member and said handle.

16. The electronic locking system of claim 15 wherein said engagement member is selectively engageable controllably by said inner element in only a single angular relationship to said inner element about said axis of rotation.

17. The electronic locking system of claim 15 wherein said engagement member is selectively disengageable controllably from said inner element by sliding axially with respect to said inner element and with respect to said securing member.

18. The electronic locking system of claim 17 wherein said engagement member is axially slidable with respect to said handle.

19. The electronic locking system of claim 17 wherein said engagement member is yieldably urged against disengagement from said inner element.

20. The electronic locking system of claim 15 wherein said engagement member is supported by said outer element so as to slide axially with respect thereto.
