1. A radiation detector system comprising:

  • at least one central radiation detector for converting ionizing radiation into a first signal;

    a plurality of separate satellite radiation detector detectors positioned adjacent to and surrounding the at least one central radiation detector for converting ionizing radiation into a plurality of second signals, each of the satellite radiation detectors having a field of view different than fields of view of the other satellite radiation detectors; and

    a plurality of radiation shields, wherein a radiation shield is disposed between each pair of adjacent satellite radiation detectors to substantially block ionizing radiation originating outside the field of view of each satellite radiation detector wherein the first signal and the second signals represent a spectral fingerprint of an area and spatial distribution of an ionizing radiation source within the area.
