Abstract

A method of tracking changes in position of a plurality of remote stations, each having, the method comprising:

(a) assigning a plurality of transmission slots to each of the remote stations;

(b) determining, by the respective stations, of their positions;

(c) initially transmitting, by the respective stations of their positions;

(d) determining, by the respective stations, of their positions, relative to the previously determined and transmitted positions; and

(e) subsequently transmitting, by the respective stations, of the determined relative positions,

wherein the slots themselves indicate the relative determined position and wherein the determined relative position is indicated by the presence or absence of a signal in one or more of said plurality of slots.

Claims

1. A method of tracking changes in position of a plurality of remote stations, each having, the method comprising:

(a) assigning a plurality of transmission slots to each of the remote stations;

(b) determining, by the respective stations, of their positions;

(c) initially transmitting, by the respective stations of their positions;

(d) determining, by the respective stations, of their positions, relative to the previously determined and transmitted positions; and

(e) subsequently transmitting, by the respective stations, of the determined relative positions,

wherein the slots themselves indicate the relative determined position and wherein the determined relative position is indicated by the presence or absence of a signal in one or more of said plurality of slots.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the method includes:

(f) determining, by the respective stations, of their positions, relative to the previously determined and transmitted relative positions; and

(g) subsequently broadcasting, by the respective stations, of the relative positions determined in (f).

3. A method according to claim 2 and including iteratively performing (f) and (g).

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein each of the stations performs (f) and (g) in each iteration.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein each of the stations performs (b) and (c) before any of the stations perform (e).

A method according to claim 1 wherein a region surrounding a previously transmitted position is divided into a plurality of contiguous regions and wherein broadcasting relative positions comprises transmitting a signal in one or more of the transmission slots, which slot or slots indicate which of the regions contains the newly determined relative position.

7. A method according to claim 6 wherein the extent of the regions is established based on an expected maximum rate of change of the position.

8. A method according to claim 6 wherein the plurality of regions comprises 9 regions.

9. A method according to claim 8 wherein 9 slots are utilized for transmitting relative position information.

10. A method according to claim 8 wherein 5 slots are utilized for transmitting relative position information.

11. A method according to claim 1 wherein possible positions form a line.

12. A method according to claim 11 wherein 3 slots are utilized for transmitting relative position information.

13. A method according to claim 11 wherein a single slot is utilized for transmitting relative position information.

14. A method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one transmission slot has a capacity of 5 bits or less per transmission.

15. A method according to claim 14 wherein the capacity is no more than three bits per transmission.

16. A method according to claim 1 wherein all of the stations complete the step of initially transmitting before any of the stations complete the step of subsequently transmitting.

17. A method according to claim 1 wherein the respective stations synchronously carry out the step of initially transmitting.

18. A method according to claim 1 wherein the respective stations synchronously carry out the step of subsequently transmitting.

26. A method according to claim 19 wherein steps (b) and (c) are performed according to the method of claim 1.

27. A method according to claim 26 wherein the number of assigned transmission slots used for mapping and tracking is the same.

28. A method according to claim 26 wherein some of the stations are mapping and some are tracking at the same time.

19. A method of mapping the positions of a plurality of remote stations, comprising:

(A) assigning a plurality of transmission slots to each of the remote stations;

(B) determining by the respective stations, of their positions;

(C) initially transmitting, by the respective stations, of a signal responsive to their determined positions in said at least one assigned slot, said transmitted position having a first position resolution; and

(D) subsequently transmitting, by the stations, of a signal related to their respective positions in at least one of the assigned transmission slots, said subsequent broadcast having a finer position resolution relative to said previously transmitted position,

wherein the slot or slots themselves indicate the determined position and wherein the determined position is indicated by the presence or absence of a signal in one or more of said slot or slots.

20. A method according to claim 19 wherein the at least one transmission slot does not have the capability of transmitting a position with a desired resolution in a single transmission.

21. A method according to claim 19 and comprising repeating (d) with successively finer position resolutions until the characteristic value is transmitted with a desired position resolution.

22. A method according to claim 21 wherein the resolution in a particular transmission is twice as fine as in a previous transmission.

23. A method according to claim 21 wherein the resolution in a particular transmission is less than twice as fine as in a previous transmission.

24. A method according to claim 19 wherein a region is divided into a plurality smaller regions and wherein the initial transmission indicates which of the smaller regions contains the station.

25. A method according to claim 24 wherein a region, equal to or slightly larger than the initially indicated smaller region is divided into a plurality even smaller regions and wherein the initial transmission indicates which of the even smaller regions contains the station.

29. A method according to claim 19 wherein all of the stations complete the step of initially transmitting before any of the stations complete the step of subsequently transmitting.

30. A method according to claim 19 wherein the respective stations synchronously carry out the step of initially transmitting.

31. A method according to claim 19 wherein the respective stations synchronously carry out the step of subsequently transmitting.
