1. An implantable device adapted for positioning about the bifurcation zone of the common carotid artery (CCA), the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the external carotid artery (ECA) so as to control the flow of embolic material arriving at the bifurcation zone from said CCA, the device comprising:

  • a tubular anchoring member configured and dimensioned for implanting in said bifurcation zone and extending within said bifurcation zone to anchor said device therein, said anchoring member bearing against, and being anchored to, a wall of said CCA and said ECA; and

    a deflecting element, secured by said anchoring member across the inlet of the ICA, said deflecting element comprising a mesh having a mesh size sufficient to allow passage of blood substantially without hindrance to said ICA whilst deflecting the flow of embolic material exceeding a predetermined size to said ECA.
