1. A medical device for delivering a fluid, comprising:

  • a removable administration set including a fluid delivery tube for delivering intravenous fluid from an IV fluid container to a patient and having an intermediate pliant segment, said administration set comprising a readable data set in the form of a bar code label including a desired fluid delivery parameter;

    a peristaltic pump mechanism comprising a housing, said housing being a compact, portable case having a receptacle configured to receive said administration set, said pump mechanism additionally being configured to engage said intermediate pliant segment to expel a fluid from said fluid delivery tube;

    a motor configured to drive the pump mechanism;

    a sensor including a bar code reader configured to read said data set upon insertion of said administration set into said housing and produce a control signal indicative of said desired fluid delivery parameter;

    a controller configured to receive said control signal and control said pump mechanism to expel fluid from said fluid delivery tube in accordance with said predetermined fluid delivery parameter.
