Method for air-fuel ratio control of a lean burn engine
First Claim
1. A method for controlling an engine having first and second groups of combustion chambers and an engine exhaust, comprising:
- operating the engine in a first operating mode where air and substantially no injected fuel are provided to the first combustion chamber group, and both air and injected fuel are provided to the second combustion chamber group at a lean air-fuel ratio, and injected fuel is adjusted to the second combustion chamber group; and
operating the engine in a second mode where both air and injected fuel are provided to both the first and second combustion chamber groups, and at least one of said air and said injected fuel provided to both said first and second combustion groups is adjusted to control air-fuel ratio of the first and second groups.

Abstract
A method is disclosed for controlling operation of an engine coupled to an exhaust treatment catalyst. Under predetermined conditions, the method operates an engine with a first group of cylinders combusting a lean air/fuel mixture and a second group of cylinders pumping air only (i.e., without fuel injection). In addition, the engine control method also provides the following features in combination with the above-described split air/lean mode: idle speed control, sensor diagnostics, air/fuel ratio control, adaptive learning, fuel vapor purging, catalyst temperature estimation, default operation, and exhaust gas and emission control device temperature control. In addition, the engine control method also changes to combusting in all cylinders under preselected operating conditions such as fuel vapor purging, manifold vacuum control, and purging of stored oxidants in an emission control device.

9. A method for controlling an engine, comprising:
-
reading a sensor output of a sensor exposed to a mixture of air and substantially no injected fuel in a first stream from the engine and a combusted lean mixture of air and fuel in a second stream from the engine;
adjusting a measured air-fuel ratio of said combusted lean air and fuel mixture to account for said air in said first stream; and
treating said combusted air and fuel in a catalyst coupled to the engine that retains oxidants including NOX when operating lean and reduces said retained oxidants when operating rich. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11)
