1. An integrated patient interface apparatus for use in providing patient feedback to an electronically controllable drug delivery system, said system including an electronic controller which electronically manages the delivery of drugs to a patient, said patient interface apparatus comprising:
- a portion for interfacing with a patient receiving drug delivery from the electronically controllable drug delivery system;
a patient-controlled drug dosage change request device integrated into said portion, said request device being capable of activation by the patient to request a change in dosage of drug;
said drug dosage change request device being electronically coupled to the electronic controller and adapted to provide dosage change request signals for use by said electronic controller in managing drug delivery to the patient; and
a patient response device integrated into said portion, said response device being capable of identifying a voluntary response by the patient to stimuli and thereby transmitting a response signal to the electronic controller, said response device being adapted to provide a response signal for use by said electronic controller in managing drug delivery to the patient.

A care system and associated methods are provided for alleviating patient pain, anxiety and discomfort associated with medical or surgical procedures. The care system facilitates a procedural physician'"'"'s safely and efficaciously providing conscious sedation to a patient by providing a responsiveness monitoring system which monitors the responsiveness of the patient and generates a value representing the level of patient responsiveness. In further aspects of the invention, the responsiveness monitoring system is an automated system which includes patient query and response devices. Additional embodiments of the system and methods are directed to alleviating patient pain or discomfort while enabling safe patient controlled drug delivery in correlation with the monitoring of patient health conditions.

means for deriving a level of responsiveness from response times of said patient to said stimulus; and

a sensory stimulus device coupled to said portion, said stimulus device capable of being activated to produce a sensory stimulus;
a patient response device coupled to said portion, said response device being capable of identifying a voluntary response by the patient to a produced sensory stimulus emanating from said sensory stimulus device;
a patient health monitor coupled to said electronic controller and adapted to provide a signal reflecting a monitored health condition of the patient; and
means for electronically communicating with an electronic controller of a drug delivery system;
