Abstract

A method for displaying visual information on a display screen of a computer, comprising the steps of scaling the visual information to produce a scaled representation to fit on the display screen the scaled representation containing the entire content of the visual information; selecting a region of interest within the scaled representation; applying a transformation to the scaled representation to improve the visual detail in the region of interest; and, displaying the transformed presentation on the display screen.

Claims

1. A method for displaying visual information on a display screen of a computer, comprising:

scaling said visual information to produce a scaled representation to fit on said display screen;

selecting a region of interest within said scaled representation;

applying a transformation to said scaled representation to improve visual detail in said region of interest by;

creating a lens surface having a predetermined lens surface shape for said region of interest, wherein said lens surface is comprised of a plurality of polygonal surfaces constructed from a plurality of points sampled from said lens surface shape;

selecting parameters for said polygonal surfaces including size, shape, number, density, and pattern; and

, creating a presentation by overlaying said scaled representation on said lens surface and projecting said lens surface with said overlaid scaled representation onto a plane; and

,

displaying said presentation on said display screen.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said parameters for said polygonal surfaces are selected to optimize computation time for said presentation.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions surrounding said region of interest.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions where said lens surface shape has a slope that exceeds a predetermined value.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said lens surface shape has a slope and said density of said polygonal surfaces is proportional to said slope.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said polygonal surfaces are triangles.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said polygonal surfaces each have a height above a basal plane, said height selected to provide a proportional magnification for at least a portion of said region of interest.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said polygonal surfaces are selected to provide a uniformly magnified area for at least a portion of said region of interest.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said region of interest, said lens surface, and said lens surface shape include a plurality of regions of interest, a plurality of lens surfaces, and a plurality of lens surface shapes, respectively.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said visual information includes newspapers, magazines, telephone directories, and maps.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein said visual information includes web page content.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said display screen is contained in a handheld device.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein said visual information is a newspaper page.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein said newspaper page includes a headlines, columns, articles, graphics, and advertisements.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said region of interest includes a headline, a column, an article, a graphic, and an advertisement.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said column has a shape and at least a portion of said lens surface shape corresponds to said shape.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein said lens surface shape provides magnified text or increased font size text for at least a portion of said column.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said lens surface shape has at least one continuous tapered transition from said portion of slid column to at least one area of said newspaper page having non-magnified text or non-increased font size text.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said lens surface shape is selected to provide partial overwriting of areas of said newspaper page adjacent to said column;

to blend said lens surface into the undistorted areas of said newspaper page;

to provide sufficient space for said lens surface in said presentation; and

, to preserve spatial orientation of said areas of said newspaper page adjacent to said column.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein said region of interest has a shape and at least a portion of said lens surface shape corresponds to said shape.

21. The method of claim 1 and further comprising the step of moving said lens surface about said scaled representation over time to provide a dynamic presentation.

22. The method of claim 1 wherein said region of interest is selected based on data provided by an external data source.

23. The method of claim 22 where said external source includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular telephone network.

24. A data processing system including an input device, a central processing unit, memory, and a display, said data processing system having stored therein data representing sequences of instructions which when executed cause the method of any of claims 1 and 2 through 23 to be performed.

25. A computer software product including sequences of instructions which when executed cause the method of any of claims 1 and 2 through 23 to be performed.

26. An integrated circuit product including sequences of instructions which when executed cause the method of any of claims 1 and 2 through 23 to be performed.

27. A method for displaying a region of interest within visual information on a display screen of a computer comprising;

applying a transformation to said visual information to improve visual detail in said region of interest by;

creating a lens surface having a predetermined lens surface shape for said region of interest, wherein said lens surface is comprised of a plurality of polygonal surfaces constructed from a plurality of points sampled from said lens surface shape;

selecting parameters for said polygonal surfaces including size, shape, number, density, and pattern; and

, creating a presentation by overlaying said visual information on said lens surface and projecting said lens surface with said visual information onto a plane; and

,

displaying said presentation on said display screen.

28. The method of claim 27 and further comprising scaling said visual information to fit on said display screen.

29. The method of claim 27 wherein said parameters for said polygonal surfaces are selected to optimize computation time for said presentation.

30. The method of claim 27 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions surrounding said region of interest.

31. The method of claim 27 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions where said lens surface shape has a slope that exceeds a predetermined value.

32. The method of claim 27 wherein said lens surface shape has a slope and said density of said polygonal surfaces is proportional to said slope.

33. The method of claim 27 wherein said polygonal surfaces are triangles.

34. The method of claim 27 wherein said polygonal surfaces each have a height above a basal plane, said height selected to provide a proportional magnification for at least a portion of said region of interest.

35. The method of claim 27 wherein said polygonal surfaces are selected to provide uniformly magnified area for at least a portion of said region of interest.

36. The method of claim 27 wherein said region of interest, said lens surface, and said lens surface shape include a plurality of regions of interest, a plurality of lens surfaces, and a plurality of lens surface shapes, respectively.

37. The method of claim 27 wherein said region of interest has a shape and at least a portion of said lens surface shape corresponds to said shape.

38. The method of claim 27 wherein said lens surface shape distorts at least a portion of said region of interest.

39. The method of claim 38 wherein said portion of said region of interest is magnified.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein said portion of said region of interest includes text and said text is increased in font size.

41. The method of claim 38 wherein said lens surface shape has at least one continuous tapered transition from said portion of said region of interest to at least one undistorted area of said visual information.

42. The method of claim 27 wherein said lens surface shape provides overwriting of at least a portion of said visual information adjacent to said region of interest.

43. The method of claim 42 wherein said lens surface shape preserves spatial orientation of said portion of said visual information adjacent to said region of interest.

44. The method of claim 27 wherein said lens surface shape blends at least a portion of said lens surface into undistorted areas of said visual information.

45. The method of claim 27 wherein said lens surface shape provides sufficient space for said lens surface in aid presentation.

46. The method of claim 27 wherein said visual information is a page, said page including a newspaper page, magazine page, a telephone directory page, a map page, and a web page.

47. The method of claim 46 wherein said region of interest includes a headline, a column, an article, a graphic, and an advertisement appearing on said page.

48. The method of claim 27 wherein said display screen is contained in a handheld device.

49. The method of claim 27 and further comprising moving said lens surface about said visual information over time to provide a dynamic presentation.

50. The method of claim 27 wherein said region of interest is selected based on data provided by an external data source.

51. The method of claim 50 where said external source includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular telephone network.

52. A method for displaying visual information on a display screen of a computer comprising:

scaling said visual information to produce a scaled representation to fit on said display screen;

selecting a region of interest within said scaled representation;

applying a transformation to said scaled representation to improve visual detail in said region of interest by;

creating a lens surface having a predetermined lens surface shape for said region of interest; and

, creating a presentation by overlaying said scaled representation on said lens surface and projecting said lens surface with said overlaid scaled representation onto a plane; and

,

displaying said presentation on said display screen, wherein;

said visual information is a newspaper page including a column;

said region of interest includes said column; and

,

said lens surface shape is selected to provide partial overwriting of areas of said newspaper page adjacent to said column and to blend said lens surface into undistorted areas of said newspaper page.

53. The method of claim 52 wherein said lens surface shape preserves spatial orientation of said areas of said newspaper page adjacent to said column.

54. The method of claim 52 wherein said lens surface shape provides sufficient space for said lens surface in aid presentation.

55. The method of claim 52 wherein said column has a shape and at least a portion of said lens surface shape corresponds to said shape.

56. The method of claim 52 wherein said lens surface shape distorts at least a portion of said column.

57. The method of claim 56 wherein said portion of said column is magnified.

58. The method of claim 56 wherein said portion of said column includes text and said text is increased in font size.

59. The method of claim 56 wherein said lens surface shape has at least one continuous tapered transition from said portion of said column to at least one undistorted area of said newspaper page.

60. The method of claim 52 wherein said lens surface is comprised of a plurality of polygonal surfaces constructed from a plurality of points sampled from said lens surface shape.

61. The method of claim 60 wherein said applying a transformation includes selecting parameters for said polygonal surfaces including size, shape, number, density, and pattern.

62. The method of claim 61 wherein said parameters for said polygonal surfaces are selected to optimize computation time for said presentation.

63. The method of claim 61 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions surrounding said region of interest.

64. The method of claim 61 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions where said lens surface shape has a slope that exceeds a predetermined value.

65. The method of claim 61 wherein said lens surface shape has a slope and said density of said polygonal surfaces is proportional to said slope.

66. The method of claim 61 wherein said polygonal surfaces are triangles.

67. The method of claim 61 wherein said polygonal surfaces each have a height above a basal plane, said height selected to provide a proportional magnification for at least a portion of said column.

68. The method of claim 61 wherein said polygonal surfaces are selected to provide a uniformly magnified area for at least a portion of said column.

69. The method of claim 52 wherein said region of interest, said lens surface, and said lens surface shape include a plurality of regions of interest, a plurality of lens surfaces, and a plurality of lens surface shapes, respectively.

70. The method of claim 52 wherein said newspaper page includes a magazine page, a telephone directory age, and a map page.

71. The method of claim 52 wherein said newspaper page includes a web page.

72. The method of claim 52 wherein said display screen is contained in a handheld device.

73. The method of claim 52 and further comprising the step of moving said lens surface about said scaled representation over time to provide a dynamic presentation.

74. The method of claim 52, wherein said region of interest is selected based on data provided by an external data source.

75. The method of claim 74 where said external source includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular telephone network.

76. A method for displaying a region of interest within visual information on a display screen of a computer comprising:

applying a transformation to said visual information to improve visual detail in said region of interest by;

creating a lens surface having a predetermined lens surface shape for said region of interest; and

, creating a presentation by overlaying said visual information on said lens surface and projecting said lens surface with said visual information onto a plane;

said lens surface shape providing overwriting of at least a portion of said visual information adjacent to said region of interest and blending of at least a portion of said lens surface into at least one undistorted area of said visual information; and

,

displaying said presentation on said display screen.

77. The method of claim 76 wherein said lens surface shape preserves spatial orientation of said portion of said visual information adjacent to said region of interest.

78. The method of claim 76 wherein said lens surface shape provides sufficient space for said lens surface in aid presentation.

79. The method of claim 76 and further comprising scaling said visual information to fit on said display screen.

80. The method of claim 76 wherein said lens surface is comprised of a plurality of polygonal surfaces constructed from a plurality of points sampled from said lens surface shape.

81. The method of claim 80 wherein said applying a transformation includes selecting parameters for said polygonal surfaces including size, shape, number, density, and pattern.

82. The method of claim 81 wherein said parameters for said polygonal surfaces are selected to optimize computation time for said presentation.

83. The method of claim 81 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions surrounding said region of interest.

84. The method of claim 81 wherein said density of said polygonal surfaces is increased in regions where said lens surface shape has a slope that exceeds a predetermined value.

85. The method of claim 81 wherein said lens surface shape has a slope and said density of said polygonal surfaces is proportional to said slope.

86. The method of claim 81 wherein said polygonal surfaces are triangles.

87. The method of claim 81 wherein said polygonal surfaces each have a height above a basal plane, said height selected to provide a proportional magnification for at least a portion of said region of interest.

88. The method of claim 81 wherein said polygonal surfaces are selected to provide a uniformly magnified area for at least a portion of said region of interest.

89. The method of claim 76 wherein said region of interest, said lens surface, and said lens surface shape include a plurality of regions of interest, a plurality of lens surfaces, and a plurality of lens surface shapes, respectively.

90. The method of claim 76 wherein said region of interest has a shape and at least a portion of said lens surface shape corresponds to said shape.

91. The method of claim 76 wherein said lens surface shape distorts at least a portion of said region of interest.

92. The method of claim 91 wherein said portion of said region of interest is magnified.

93. The method of claim 91 wherein said portion of said region of interest includes magnified text and increased font size text.

94. The method of claim 91 wherein said lens surface shape has at least one continuous tapered transition fpm said portion of said region of interest to at least one undistorted area of said visual information.

95. The method of claim 76 wherein said visual information is a page, said page including a newspaper page, magazine page, a telephone directory page, a map page, and a web page.

96. The method of claim 95 wherein said region of interest includes a headline, a column, an article, a graphic and an advertisement appearing on said page.

97. The method of claim 76 wherein said display screen is contained in a handheld device.

98. The method of claim 76 and further comprising moving said lens surface about said visual information ver time to provide a dynamic presentation.

99. The method of claim 76 wherein said region of interest is selected based on data provided by an external data source.

100. The method of claim 99 where said external source includes a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular telephone network.
