1. An image forming apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of image carriers;
a plurality of driven transmission members each being affixed to a respective image carrier;
image carrier driving means for causing said plurality of image carriers to rotate via said plurality of driven transmission members;
a plurality of image forming means for forming an image on a respective image carrier;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via a plurality of image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers;
a plurality of image transferring means each for transferring an image from a respective image carrier to said transfer medium, the images being transferred from said plurality of image carriers to a preselected position on said transfer medium being driven by said transfer medium driving means one above the other;
wherein when the image is formed on said image carrier and then transferred to said transfer medium, a rotation speed variation of said image carrier identical with one rotation period of said image carrier and ascribable to variations including a variation of said driven transmission member occurs in a phase set such that the images are transferred from said image carriers to said transfer medium one above the other in accurate register;
wherein the chase of the rotation speed variation of said image carrier is set in accordance with rotation speed variations of said image carriers measured, and wherein said image carrier driving means comprises;
a plurality of drive sources each being configured to drive a particular group of image carriers;
absolute rotation angle sensing means each for sensing an absolute rotation angle of a respective driven transmission member included in the particular group of image carriers; and
drive control means configured to control said plurality of drive sources in accordance with outputs of said absolute rotation angle sensing means such that the images are transferred from said image carriers to said transfer medium in accurate register.

An image forming apparatus that reduces an influence of the variation of rotation speed of an image carrier, which is ascribable to, e.g., the eccentricity of a driven transmission member mounted on the image carrier, on the misregister of different colors. Further, the apparatus reduces the influence of the load variation of the image carrier acting on a transfer medium drive member on the misregister of different colors.

1. An image forming apparatus comprising:

a plurality of image carriers;
a plurality of driven transmission members each being affixed to a respective image carrier;
image carrier driving means for causing said plurality of image carriers to rotate via said plurality of driven transmission members;
a plurality of image forming means for forming an image on a respective image carrier;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via a plurality of image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers;
a plurality of image transferring means each for transferring an image from a respective image carrier to said transfer medium, the images being transferred from said plurality of image carriers to a preselected position on said transfer medium being driven by said transfer medium driving means one above the other;
wherein when the image is formed on said image carrier and then transferred to said transfer medium, a rotation speed variation of said image carrier identical with one rotation period of said image carrier and ascribable to variations including a variation of said driven transmission member occurs in a phase set such that the images are transferred from said image carriers to said transfer medium one above the other in accurate register;
wherein the chase of the rotation speed variation of said image carrier is set in accordance with rotation speed variations of said image carriers measured, and wherein said image carrier driving means comprises;
a plurality of drive sources each being configured to drive a particular group of image carriers;
absolute rotation angle sensing means each for sensing an absolute rotation angle of a respective driven transmission member included in the particular group of image carriers; and
drive control means configured to control said plurality of drive sources in accordance with outputs of said absolute rotation angle sensing means such that the images are transferred from said image carriers to said transfer medium in accurate register.

2. An image forming apparatus comprising:

a plurality of image carriers;
image carrier driving means for causing said plurality of image carriers to rotate;
a plurality of image forming means each for forming an image on a respective image carrier;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via a plurality of image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers in contact with said plurality of image carriers; and
a plurality of image transferring means each for transferring the image from the respective image carrier to said transfer medium;
wherein said plurality of image carriers are arranged at preselected intervals in a direction of movement of said transfer medium, so that the images are transferred from said plurality of image carriers to said transfer medium being conveyed by said transfer medium driving means one above the other, and a period of time necessary for said transfer medium to move a distance between nearby image carriers is a natural multiple (N) of a rotation period of each image carrier;
wherein said transfer medium driving means comprises a rotary drive member configured to contact and drive either one of an endless belt for supporting and conveying said transfer medium and said transfer medium implemented as an endless belt, a natural multiple (M) of a circumferential length of said drive member is equal to the distance between nearby image carriers, and a period of time necessary for a surface of each image carrier to move from a respective image writing position where a respective image forming means is positioned to a respective image transfer position is equal to a natural multiple (I) of a rotation period of said drive member;
wherein the period of time necessary for said transfer medium to move said distance is equal to a rotation period of said image carrier, two times of a circumferential length of said drive member is equal to the distance between nearby image carriers, and a period of time necessary for a surface of each image carrier to move from a respective image writing position where a respective image forming means is positioned to a respective image transfer position is equal to a rotation period of said drive member;
wherein drive member driving means drives said drive member via a driven transmission member that transmits a drive force to said drive member, and a natural multiple of a rotation period of said driven transmission member is equal to the rotation period of said drive member. - View Dependent Claims (3)

4. An image forming apparatus comprising:

a plurality of image carriers implemented as drums;
image carrier driving means for driving each of said plurality of image carriers independently of the others;
means for forming images on surfaces of said image carriers;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers;
image transferring means each for transferring the image from a respective image carrier to said transfer medium; and
drive control means configured to control said image carrier driving means and said transfer medium driving means and comprising means for obtaining radius information representative of radiuses of said plurality of image carriers;
wherein said drive control means determines, based on said drum radius information, angular velocities that match mean peripheral speeds of said plurality of image carriers, as measured at said image transfer positions, and executes drive control by using said angular velocities as set speeds. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7)

8. An image forming apparatus comprising:

a plurality of image carriers implemented as drums;
image carrier driving means for driving each of said plurality of image carriers independently of the others;
means for forming images on surfaces of said image carriers;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers;
image transferring means each for transferring the image from a respective image carrier to said transfer medium; and
drive control means configured to control said image carrier driving means and said transfer medium driving means and comprising means for obtaining radius information representative of radiuses of said plurality of image carriers;
wherein to maintain a distortion of images transferred to said transfer medium constant, said drive control means determines an angular velocity that gives a speed difference determined in accordance with the radius of a respective image carrier between a mean peripheral speed of said image carrier and a moving speed of said transfer medium, as measured at the image transfer position, and executes control by using said angular velocity as a set value. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10)

a plurality of image carriers implemented as drums;
image carrier driving means for driving each of said plurality of image carriers independently of the others;
means for forming images on surfaces of said image carriers;
transfer medium driving means for causing a transfer medium to move via image transfer positions assigned to said plurality of image carriers; and
image transferring means each for transferring the image from a respective image carrier to said transfer medium;
wherein said plurality of image carriers are sequentially arranged in a direction of movement of said transfer medium in an incrementing order or a decrementing order with respect to a radius, and wherein said plurality of image carriers are rotated to have equal mean peripheral speeds.
