1. A measuring instrument, comprising:

  • a first temperature sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of temperature of a medium;

    a second temperature sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of the temperature of the medium, the first and second temperature sensors disposed in a heat transfer relation; and

    circuitry including a fuzzy control apparatus configured to receive and compare the first temperature sensor signal with the second temperature sensor signal to detect proper operation of the first temperature sensor, the fuzzy control apparatus comprising;

    an input for receiving a first sensed temperature signal from the first temperature sensor and a second sensed temperature signal from the second temperature sensor;

    a storage circuit for storing a plurality of fuzzy control rules; and

    a fuzzy control execution circuit coupled to the input and the storage circuit, and operative to determine a control error between the first and second sensed temperature signals; and

    wherein both the first and the second temperature sensors use different physical techniques to measure temperature readings of the medium.
