1. A temperature sensing device for monitoring an internal temperature of a human or other animal, comprising:

  • a flexible member having a spring action such that said flexible member expands after insertion into a body cavity of the animal, said flexible member having an outer surface, a temperature transducer coupled to said outer surface, said temperature transducer configured to be in thermal contact with a surface of the body cavity of the animal and operable to measure a surface temperature of the surface of the body cavity, a temperature sensor mounted on said outer surface of said flexible member and operative to measure a reference temperature, said temperature sensor being thermally insulated from said temperature transducer by said flexible member and positioned so as to be external to the body cavity after insertion into the body cavity, and an electronic module coupled to said temperature transducer and said temperature sensor, said electronic module operable to compute the internal temperature of the animal from the surface temperature and the reference temperature.
