Abstract

A low cost, accurate, single use, disposable, iontophoretic fluid delivery device having cationic and anionic chambers separated by container structure and arranged to promote a flow of treatment ions into a body. The device desirably uses rugged mini batteries safely to provide increased electromotive force to the ion transfer process compared to galvanic cells having electrolyte matched to a human body'"'"'s electrolyte. Mini batteries may be located in one or both cationic and anionic chambers, and/or attached to structure of a container outside the chambers. One or more electric circuit components may be arranged in a parallel circuit to the body to provide enhanced efficacy of the device. For example, a shunt resistance may be provided to control delivery of a beneficial agent in an amount over a time interval corresponding to any portion of a battery capacity, typically between 1 mAmp-min to 500 mAmp-min, or more. Substrates, located in the chambers and adapted to hold electrolyte or treatment drugs, may be electrically conductive to resist polarization of the chemicals near a conducting terminal. Cationic and anionic chambers may be made having different sizes and/or shapes to facilitate placement of treatment drugs into the correct chamber.

Claims

1. An iontophoretic fluid delivery device comprising:

a cationic chamber defining a volume in which to hold a cationic substance, a wall of said cationic chamber having a first passageway permitting migration therethrough by ions;

an anionic chamber defining a volume in which to hold an anionic substance, a wall of said anionic chamber having a second passageway permitting migration therethrough by ions;

wherein said first and second passageways are oriented and arranged on a surface of a container to enable creation of an ion conducting path, through a cooperating body, of an electrical circuit between said cationic and anionic chambers;

a first electromotive cell comprising a mini battery, constructed to produce an approximately square-wave current discharge over its working life and comprising first and second poles of opposite electrical sign, said first electromotive cell being disposed in an electron conducting path configured to complete said electrical circuit; and

a second conductive path, comprising an electronic component assembly comprising a resistor, disposed in an electric circuit parallel to said ion conducting path and between said first and second poles;

wherein said resistor is sized in harmony with a capacity of said mini battery to deplete said mini battery in a desired treatment interval to limit a treatment dose from said iontophoretic fluid delivery device to a subject;

wherein a quantity of energy from said mini battery is substantially exhausted after delivery of said treatment dose.

2. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising an oscillator element operable to control a current flow between high and low values.

3. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising an LED.

4. The device of claim 3, said LED being:

operable to dissipate electrical energy partially in the form of heat; and

located on said device to warm the contents of the cationic chamber or the anionic chamber.

5. The device of claim 3, said LED being mounted on said device to provide a visible signal to indicate an operating status of said device.

6. The device of claim 1 said resistor being:

operable to dissipate electric energy at least partially in the form of heat; and

located on said device to warm the contents of the cationic chamber or the anionic chamber.

7. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising a switch.

8. The device of claim 7, said switch comprising a manually activated switch.

9. The device of claim 7, said switch comprising an automated switch.

10. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising a capacitor.

11. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising an inductor.

12. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising a transducer.

13. The device of claim 12, said transducer comprising a Light Emitting Diode.

14. The device of claim 1, said electronic component assembly further comprising circuitry elements formed on a silicone chip.

19. The iontophoretic fluid delivery device of claim 1, wherein said mini battery is configured to deliver a current of about 78 mAmp-min.

15. In a disposable iontophoretic device having a cationic chamber and an anionic chamber, the improvement comprising:

a self-contained electromotive source comprising a mini battery disposed in a first electric circuit path between said cationic and said anionic chambers; and

an electric component assembly disposed in a second electric circuit path, said second electric circuit path being electrically in parallel to a third ion conducting path between said cationic and anionic chambers;

wherein said electric component assembly comprises a resistor having a value of resistance selected to determine a quantity of energy from said mini battery for direction through said third ion conductive path to control a delivery amount of a beneficial agent;

wherein said quantity of energy from said mini battery is substantially exhausted after delivery of a treatment dose of said beneficial agent.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein said component assembly further comprises an LED.

17. The device according to claim 16, said LED being mounted on said device to provide a visible indication of operational status of said device.

18. The device according to claim 17, said LED further being located to operate as a heat source to the cationic chamber or the anionic chamber.

20. The disposable iontophoretic device of claim 15, wherein said mini battery is configured to deliver a current of about 78 mAmp-min.
