1. A method of controlling a number of instances of an application running in a computing environment, comprising:

  • monitoring a current load on an application running in the computing environment, wherein the current load comprises at least one indicator of a level of usage of available instances of the application, and wherein the monitoring comprises monitoring a current number of instances of the application;

    altering the current number of instances of the application running in the computing environment based on results of the monitoring; and

    specifying a minimum number of instances of the application;

    wherein the monitoring comprises monitoring the current number of instances of the application for falling below the minimum number of instances for at least a predetermined amount of time.
