Abstract

A catheter anchoring system is provided to securely anchor to a patient'"'"'s skin a catheter and fluid supply tube interconnection. The anchoring system comprises a retainer configured to receive a catheter adaptor in a variety of positions. The adaptor interconnects the catheter and the fluid supply tube. In one embodiment the adaptor takes the form of a conical-shaped fitting permanently attached to the collar and includes a radially extending member that projects from the adaptor. The anchoring system additionally includes a flexible, adhesive anchor pad which supports a tube clip, as well as the retainer. The retainer includes a channel that is configured to receive the adaptor in a snap-fit manner. The retainer also includes a plurality of lateral slots. Each slot is sized to receive and to capture the radically extending member (e.g., an annular collar) of the adaptor to prevent the adaptor from sliding within the channel.

Claims

1. An anchoring system for use with a catheter having an adaptor with a radially extending member projecting therefrom, said anchoring system comprising:

a retainer including first and second channel portions which extend about a longitudinal axis, each channel portion generally having a truncated cross-sectional shape with an opening along said longitudinal axis, at least one of the channel portions being sized to surround at least a portion of the adaptor through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis, and a lateral slot which extends generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and lies between said first and second channel portions, at least one of the channel portions having a width that tapers along said longitudinal axis; and

a flexible anchor pad having an adhesive bottom surface and a top surface on which said retainer is mounted, said retainer being positioned on said top surface in a position exposing the opening of said channel portions.

2. An anchoring system as in claim 1, wherein the width of the first channel portion tapers from a larger size at a point removed from the lateral slot to a smaller size at a point adjacent to the lateral slot.

3. An anchoring system as in claim 1, wherein the width of the second channel portion tapers from a larger size adjacent to the lateral slot to a smaller size at a point farther from the lateral slot.

An anchoring system as in claim 1, wherein both the first and second channel portions taper along their length, the first channel portion tapering from a larger size width at a point removed from the lateral slot to a smaller size at a point adjacent to the lateral slot, and the second channel portion tapering from a larger size at a point adjacent to the lateral slot to a smaller size at a point farther from the lateral slot.

5. An anchoring system as in claim 4, wherein the first and second channel portions together comprise a conical tapering channel for receiving a conical-shaped adaptor.

6. An anchoring system as in claim 1, wherein each channel portion is sized to surround at least a portion of the adaptor through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis.

7. An anchoring system as in claim 6 further comprising at least one additional lateral slot arranged next to the other slot along the longitudinal axis so as to provide multiple positions in the longitudinal direction in which to insert the radially extending member of the adaptor.

8. An anchoring system for use with a catheter hub having a radially extending member projecting therefrom, said anchoring system comprising:

a retainer including first and second channel portions which extend about a longitudinal axis, each channel portion generally having a truncated cross-sectional shape with an opening along said longitudinal axis, at least one of the channel portions being sized to surround at least a portion of the catheter hub through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis, and a lateral slot which extends generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and lies between said first and second channel portions, at least one of the channel portions having a width that tapers alone said longitudinal axis; and

a flexible anchor pad having an adhesive bottom surface and a top surface, said retainer being adhered to said anchor pad.

9. An anchoring system for use with a catheter hub having a tapering shape and a radially extending member projecting therefrom, said anchoring system comprising:

a retainer including a channel with an opening along a longitudinal axis, said channel extending between a first location and a second location along said longitudinal axis and having a first channel width at said first location and a second channel width at said second location, wherein said first channel width differs from said second channel width, at least two lateral slots which extend generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and lying between said first and second locations, and a receptacle located across from said opening and extending from said channel, at least a portion of each lateral slot opening into the receptacle.

10. An anchoring system as in claim 9, wherein said receptacle extends beyond said lateral slots along said longitudinal axis.

11. An anchoring system as in claim 9, wherein a portion of said channel that is located adjacent to said lateral slots is sized to surround at least a portion of said catheter hub through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis.

12. An anchoring system as in claim 9, further comprising a flexible anchor pad having an adhesive bottom surface and a top surface, said retainer being adhered to said anchor pad.

13. An anchoring system for use with a catheter having a conical-shaped adaptor with a radially extending member projecting therefrom, said anchoring system comprising:

a retainer including a first channel portion and a second channel portion, each channel portion extending about a longitudinal axis and generally having a truncated cross-sectional shape with an opening along said longitudinal axis, at least one of the channel portions being sized to surround at least a portion of the adaptor through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis, and a lateral slot which extends generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and lies between said first and second channel portions, the first and second channel portions together forming a generally conical tapering channel for receiving the conical-shaped adaptor; and

a flexible anchor pad having an adhesive bottom surface and a top surface, said retainer being adhered to said anchor pad.

14. A retainer for use with a catheter hub having a radially extending member projecting therefrom, said retainer comprising:

a first channel portion and a second channel portion, each channel portion extending about a longitudinal axis and generally having a truncated cross-sectional shape with an opening along said longitudinal axis, at least one of the channel portions being sized to surround at least a portion of the catheter hub through an arc of greater than 180°

about said longitudinal axis, and a lateral slot extending generally perpendicular to said longitudinal axis and lying between said first and second channel portions, at least one of the channel portions having a width that tapers along said longitudinal axis.
