1. In an automobile having an exhaust system, a catalytic converter disposed in the exhaust system, and an onboard electrolyzer that uses liquid water to produce hydrogen gas for introduction to the catalytic converter to reduce cold start emissions, the improvement comprising:

  • a cooling fluid flow loop in fluid communication with fluid from the engine coolant system and in thermal communication with a condensing region of the exhaust system, wherein circulation of the fluid from the engine coolant system loop provides heat transfer from the condensing region to the fluid in the engine coolant system;

    a collection reservoir in the condensing region to receive the condensate; and

    means for supplying the condensate from the collection reservoir to the onboard electrolyzer.
