a display that displays the menu commands;
a pair of scroll keys for selecting menu commands; and
an alphanumeric keypad to input information into the field programmable gate array, wherein the information includes a setpoint of at least one of a current and a voltage for charging the battery and the field programmable gate array controls a silicon control rectifier to allow at least one of the setpoint current and setpoint voltage to pass through to the battery.

inputting information via an alphanumeric keypad into a battery charger and tester;
processing the inputted information with a field programmable gate array;
displaying menu commands on a multi-line alphanumeric display;
