Abstract

An intervertebral disc device is provided comprising a distal probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising an active and return electrode which are each spirally wrapped around the probe such that there are multiple alternating bands of the same active and return positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the active and return being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

Claims

1. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple active bands and return bands of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in opposing directions along a single plane relative to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

2. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the distal section of the probe is predisposed to forming a loop.

3. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in at least two directions along at least two different planes relative to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

4. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the flexible neck has a round cross section.

5. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

6. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the flexible neck has two flat surfaces extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck on opposing sides of the neck.

7. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the neck is formed of a flexible coil.

8. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a dome shaped distal tip.

9. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 8 wherein the distal tip is dome shaped and symmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

10. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a distal tip that has a flat surface perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

11. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

12. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a spring.

13. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a pivot mechanism.

14. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a ball and socket mechanism.

15. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the probe includes a distal section including a tip and a flexible section, the flexible section being configured to bend as a result of pressure from tissue in an intervertebral disc such that a portion of the probe proximal of the tip leads distal advancement of the probe through the intervertebral disc.

16. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the device further includes flexible tubing operably interconnecting the proximal handle with the probe.

17. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the device further includes a connector system which enables an introducer to be removeably attached to the connector system, the probe being positionable within the introducer for delivery within the intervertebral disc with the assistance of the introducer.

18. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the handle further comprises a probe control element for controlling the movement of the probe adjacent a distal end of the device.

19. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the device comprises multiple active electrodes and multiple return electrodes.

20. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 19 wherein the the multiple active and return electrodes form a plurality of alternating bands along a longitudinal length of the distal section of the probe.

21. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 1 wherein the one or more active electrodes and the one or more return electrodes are spirally wrapped around the probe to form the multiple active bands and return bands.

22. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe being predisposed to forming a loop when extended from the distal end of the introducer, the looping portion of the probe comprising an active electrode and a return electrode which are positioned on the probe such that the active and return electrodes are on opposing sides of the probe loop; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

23. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 22 wherein the probe comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend to form the loop as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in opposing directions along a single plane relative to the longitudinal axis of the probe.

24. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 22 wherein the probe comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend to form the loop as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

25. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 22 wherein the distal section of the probe that is predisposed to forming a loop when extended from the distal end of the introducer includes a free end.

27. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 23 wherein the probe comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in opposing directions along a single plane relative to the longitudinal axis of the probe.

28. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 23 wherein the probe comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the neck is formed of a flexible coil.

29. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 23 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a pivot mechanism.

26. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising an active and a return electrode which are each spirally wrapped around the probe such that there are multiple alternating bands of the same active and return electrodes positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

30. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in at least two directions along at least two different planes relative to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

31. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 30 wherein the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

32. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 30 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the probe.

33. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

34. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 33 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that has a flat surface perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

35. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 33 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

36. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has two flat surfaces extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck on opposing sides of the neck.

37. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 36 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that has a flat surface perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the probe.

38. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 36 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

39. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc,

wherein the probe further includes a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the neck is formed of a flexible coil.

40. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 39 wherein the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

41. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 39 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

42. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc, the probe further comprising a distal tip that has a flat surface perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the probe; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

43. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 42 wherein the probe further comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck is predisposed to bending in at least two directions along at least two different planes relative to the longitudinal axis of the probe.

44. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 42 wherein the distal tip is asymmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the probe.

45. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrode which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple active bands and return bands of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc, the probe further comprising a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

46. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 45 wherein the distal section includes a tip and a flexible section, the flexible section being configured to bend as a result of pressure from tissue in an intervertebral disc such that a portion of the probe proximal of the tip leads distal advancement of the probe through the intervertebral disc.

47. An intervertebral disc device according to further comprising multiple active electrodes and multiple return electrodes.

48. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a spring; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

49. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 48 wherein the probe further comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

50. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 48 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

51. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a pivot mechanism; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

52. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 51 wherein the probe further comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

53. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 51 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

54. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc, the probe further comprising a distal tip and a portion proximal to the tip, the tip being attached to the proximal portion by a ball and socket mechanism; and

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc.

55. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 54 wherein the probe further comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

56. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 54 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.

57. An intervertebral disc device comprising:

a probe sized to be extended from a distal end of an introducer that is percutaneously delivered into an interior of an intervertebral disc, a distal section of the probe comprising one or more active electrodes and one or more return electrodes which are positioned on the probe such that there are multiple pairs of an active band and a return band of the active and return electrodes adjacent each other positioned longitudinally along the length of the distal section of the probe, the electrodes being adapted to deliver bipolar electromagnetic energy to tissue within the intervertebral disc;

a proximal handle for externally guiding the probe within an intervertebral disc; and

a connector system which enables an introducer to be removably attached to the connector system, the probe being positionable within the introducer for delivery within the intervertebral disc with assistance of the introducer.

58. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 57 wherein the probe further comprises a flexible neck that causes the probe to bend as the probe is advanced within the intervertebral disc, and the flexible neck has at least one flat surface extending along a longitudinal axis of the neck.

59. An intervertebral disc device according to claim 57 wherein the probe further comprises a distal tip that is asymmetrical about a longitudinal axis of the probe.
