Abstract

A needless valve is described which avoids the suctioning problems of the prior needleless devices upon deactivation and which preferably provides a positive self-purging effect. The valve is self-purging at the end of an administration cycle, avoiding clogging of attached catheters or other devices, and ensures that substantially all of liquid received into the valve is delivered to the receiver. The valve is also extremely simple in design and easy to construct and assemble, since it consists of only three pieces. The valve has a base with a connector for fluid communication attachment to tubing or other device, a solid elongated fluid channeling rod, and an internal fluid flow conduit; a flexible hollow expandable and contractible plug fitting over and moveable along the rod; and a tubular housing fitting over the plug and attached to the base. When the valve is activated by insertion of a nozzle of a fluid source, the rod and plug wall cooperate so that as the plug retracts along the rod, it is stretched and its interior expanded. Upon deactivation, the plug contracts, the interior volume decreases, and the resiling plug wall forces residual fluid within the valve to be expelled through the outlet, purging the residual fluid from the valve. No negative pressure is formed, so no suctioning of blood or other fluid from a patient or receiver occurs.

Claims

1. A needleless valve for interconnecting with a blunt fluid supply nozzle, the needleless valve comprising:

a housing having a fluid inlet end and a fluid outlet end; and

a hollow flexible plug located within the housing, the hollow flexible plug having a distal end with an opening, the hollow flexible plug having a deactivated configuration in which the distal end is located in the fluid inlet end of the housing at which location the opening is closed, the distal end being movable away from the fluid inlet end of the housing in response to insertion of the blunt fluid supply nozzle into the inlet end and having an activated configuration at which time the opening opens to permit the flow of fluid through the opening and through the hollow flexible plug to a proximal end of the hollow flexible plug which is located adjacent the fluid outlet end of the housing, the hollow flexible plug moveable toward the fluid inlet end of the housing in response to withdrawal of the fluid supply nozzle from the inlet end at which time the opening closes to block the flow of fluid through the hollow flexible plug and resumes the deactivated configuration;

wherein the flexible plug includes an expanding portion located adjacent the fluid outlet end, the expanding portion having a first interior volume when the plug is in the deactivated configuration, the expanding portion expanding outwardly when the flexible plug is moved to the activated configuration wherein the expanding portion has a second interior volume, the second interior volume being equal to or greater than the first interior volume;

whereby a variable volume fluid flow path between the inlet and outlet ends is established by the flexible plug and residual fluid located in the fluid flow path is expelled from the valve through the outlet end as the plug returns to the deactivated configuration.

2. The needleless valve of claim 1 wherein the flexible plug is formed of a resilient material that biases the plug to the deactivated configuration.

The needleless valve of claim 1 wherein the flexible plug comprises a distal portion extending to the distal end, the distal portion having a wall that is thicker than a wall of the expanding portion, whereby the distal portion will resist buckling when the flexible plug returns to the deactivated configuration.

4. The needleless valve of claim 1 wherein the opening of the hollow flexible plug comprises a slit that is normally closed to resist fluid flow through itself.

5. The needleless valve of claim 4 further comprising an expander device located within the housing, the expander device having a distal tip located so as to pierce the opening of the flexible hollow plug to open the opening as the blunt fluid supply nozzle is inserted into the inlet end and the plug is caused to move inwardly relative to the housing, such that fluid may flow through the hollow flexible plug.

6. The needleless valve of claim 5 wherein the expander device includes a rod having raised and spaced-apart longitudinal surface interruptions on its exterior surface that permit the flow of fluid between the surface interruptions when the flexible hollow plug is in the activated configuration.

7. The needleless valve of claim 5 further including:

a base disposed at the fluid outlet end of the housing, the expander device being mounted to the base and extending into the housing; and

openings between the expander device and the base such that fluid may flow around the expander device and through the openings for fluid communication with the fluid outlet end.

8. The needleless valve of claim 7 wherein the fluid outlet end of the housing comprises a connector for fluid communication attachment to the housing, the openings providing fluid communication between the connector and the fluid flowing between the surface interruptions of the rod.

9. The needleless valve of claim 1 further comprising an expander device located within the housing, the expander device having an outer diameter;

wherein the hollow flexible plug is located within the housing overlying the expander device and is moveable along the expander device, at least a portion of the hollow flexible plug has an inner diameter that is smaller than the outer diameter of the expander device, the hollow flexible plug overlying the expander device such that the reduced-diameter portion cooperates with the larger outer diameter of the expander device to increase the volume of the interior of the plug during movement away from the fluid inlet end, and cooperating with the expander device to decrease the volume of the plug interior during movement toward the fluid inlet end.

The needleless valve of claim 9 wherein the expander device includes an uneven surface with portions that are raised such that the raised portions contact the smaller diameter portion of the hollow flexible plug causing it to expand outwardly as the blunt fluid supply nozzle is inserted into the inlet end and the plug is caused to move over the expander device such that fluid may flow between the interior of the plug and the exterior of the expander device and through the fluid outlet end.

11. The needleless valve of claim 10 wherein the raised portions include ribs disposed on the exterior surface of the expander device extending outwardly such that fluid may flow between the ribs and the flexible hollow plug when the flexible hollow plug is expanded outwardly.

12. The needleless valve of claim 11 wherein the ribs terminate adjacent the fluid outlet end of the housing in a hollow annular member encircling the expander device.

13. The needleless valve of claim 11 wherein the expander device includes four ribs in a cruciform shape.

14. The needleless valve of claim 11 wherein the flexible hollow plug has a shape that conforms to the shape of the uneven surface of the expander device.

15. The needleless valve of claim 14 wherein the flexible hollow plug has conforming hollow ribs to receive ribs of the expander device when the flexible hollow plug is located in the fluid inlet end of the housing.

16. The needleless valve of claim 9 wherein the expander device includes an elongated structure.
