Methods and devices for blood vessel harvesting
First Claim
1. A method for creating a working space within a body, the method comprising:
- providing a cannula having a distal end, the cannula loaded with an everting inflatable member disposed within the cannula and capable of everting out of the distal end of the cannula upon injection of gas or liquid into the cannula;
making an incision into the body and inserting the distal end of the cannula into the body; and
injecting gas or liquid into the cannula to cause the inflatable member to evert out the distal end of the cannula, thereby forcing the inflatable member to evert into body tissue and create a tunnel through the body tissue.

Abstract
Methods and devices for harvesting veins from the body. The methods and devices allow vein harvesting using laparoscopic procedures. A working space is created over the vein using standard laparoscopic procedures and a side-hooked wire is inserted into the working space and twisted to insert the side-hook under the vein. The wire is then pulled or drawn along the vein to separate the vein from the surrounding tissue. In an alternative embodiment, vein separation is accomplished by threading a soft rubber tube under the vein, grasping the ends of the tube so as to surround the vein, and then pulling the tube along the vein. In other embodiments, the working space is created with everting balloons.

2. A method for creating a particular tunnel shaped working space between two layers of tissue within a body, the method comprising:
-
providing a cannula having a distal end, the cannula loaded with an everting inflatable member disposed within the cannula and capable of everting out of the distal end of the cannula upon injection of gas or liquid into the cannula, the inflatable member attaining a shape corresponding to the particular tunnel shaped working space upon inflation;
making an incision into the body and inserting the distal end of the cannula into the body between the two layers of body tissue; and
injecting gas or liquid into the cannula to cause the inflatable member to evert out the distal end of the cannula, thereby forcing the member to evert into the body tissue and create a tunnel through the body tissue. - View Dependent Claims (3)

4. A method of boring a tunnel in a body, the method comprising:
-
providing a tube having an insertion end, the tube loaded with an everting inflatable member disposed within the tube and capable of everting out of the insertion end of the tube upon injection of gas, liquid or foam into the tube;
inserting the insertion end of the tube into the pliant material; and
injecting gas, liquid or foam into the tube to cause the inflatable member to evert out the insertion end of the tube, thereby forcing the member to evert into the pliant material and create the tunnel in the pliant material.
