1. A method for performing a surgical procedure on a heart of a patient comprising:

  • a. surgically accessing the beating heart of the patient, the beating heart having a heart rate;

    b. applying electrical energy from a power supply of sufficient amplitude and duration within an organ adjacent a nerve that regulates the heart to destimulate the beating heart and thereby slow or stop the heart rate;

    c. performing a surgical procedure on the heart while the heart rate is slowed or stopped; and

    d. applying electrical energy from the power supply of sufficient amplitude and duration to stimulate the heart and thereby start or increase the heart rate.
