Abstract

A device for ablating tissue is provided. The device comprises a conductive element with a channel for irrigating fluid formed therein, which is in contact with a non-conductive microporous interface. All or a portion of the interface may be removable. When the interface is removed, a portion of the conductive element is exposed for use in ablating tissue. Methods of using the device and of removing the interface are also provided.

Claims

1. A hemostat-type ablation device comprising:

a conductive element;

first and second jaw members configured to receive a portion of tissue between the first and second jaw members, wherein the conductive element is adjacent the first jaw member;

a lumen extending through at least a portion of the conductive element and adapted to receive a fluid therein such that the fluid is in contact with the conductive element; and

a micro-porous, non-conductive interface positioned adjacent the conductive element and the portion of tissue to allow the fluid to pass from the lumen, through the interface and into contact with the tissue.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the device further comprises a second conductive element placed adjacent the second jaw member such that the first and second conductive members form bipolar electrodes.

3. The device of claim 2 wherein the device further comprises:

a second lumen extending adjacent at least a portion of the second conductive element and adapted to receive a fluid therein such that the fluid is in contact with the conductive element;

a second micro-porous, non-conductive interface positioned adjacent the second conductive element on the second jaw member to allow fluid from the second lumen to pass through the interface.

4. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the conductive element is a metallic coil.

5. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the conductive element is a spring.

6. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the interface has a length, the length being variable.

7. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein a portion of the interface may be removed to expose the conductive element.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the interface may be rotatably opened.

9. The device of claim 7, wherein the interface comprises openings that may be slidably opened.

10. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the interface is from the group consisting of:

silicone, PTFE, and polyurethane.

11. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the interface encircles the conductive element.

12. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3, further comprising:

a plurality of openings in the conductive element communicating with the fluid receiving lumen.

13. The device of claim 1, 2 or 3 further comprising:

an infusion pump in communication with the fluid component for flowing a fluid through the lumen and interface.

14. A hemostat-type ablation device comprising:

a conductive wire element; and

first and second jaws configured to receive a portion of tissue between the first and second jaws, wherein the conductive wire element is adjacent at least one of the first and second jaws;

a lumen extending adjacent at least a portion of the conductive wire element and adapted to receive a fluid therein such that the conductive wire is in contact with the fluid; and

a micro-porous, non-conductive interface positioned adjacent the conductive element and the portion of tissue to allow the fluid to pass from the lumen, through the interface and into contact with the tissue.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the device further comprises a second conductive element placed adjacent the second jaw member such that the first and second conductive members form bipolar electrodes.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the device further comprises:

a second lumen extending adjacent at least a portion of the second conductive element and adapted to receive a fluid therein such that the fluid is in contact with the conductive element;

a second micro-porous, non-conductive interface positioned adjacent the second conductive element on the second jaw member to allow fluid from the second lumen to pass through the interface.

17. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein the conductive wire element is a metallic coil.

18. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein the conductive wire element is a spring.

19. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein the interface has a length, the length being variable.

20. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein a portion of the interface may be removed to expose the conductive wire element.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the interface may be rotatably opened.

22. The device of claim 20, wherein the interface comprises openings that may be slidably opened.

23. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein the interface is from the group consisting of:

silicone, PTFE, and polyurethane.

24. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16, wherein the interface encircles the conductive wire element.

25. The device of claim 14, 15 or 16 further comprising:

an infusion pump in communication with the fluid component for flowing a fluid through the lumen and interface.
