1. A medical system that can be used by a surgeon through a single interface to perform a medical procedure and retrieve patient data located at a remote computer, comprising:
- a monitor;
a surgical instrument;
an input device that can receive an instrument control command, a unique instrument selection command, a data retrieval control command, and a unique data retrieval selection command;
a controller that receives the instrument command, the unique instrument selection command, the data retrieval control command, and the unique data retrieval selection command from the input device, wherein the controller controls the surgical instrument in response to the instrument control command; and
a network gateway coupled to the controller, the network gateway operable to retrieve patient data from a remote computer in response to the unique data retrieval selection command and the data retrieval control command so that the patient data can be displayed on the monitor.

Abstract
The present invention pertains to control systems and provides a run time configurable control system for selecting and operating one of a plurality of operating room devices from a single input source, the system comprising a master controller having a voice control interface and means for routing control signals. The system additionally may include a plurality of slave controllers to provide expandability of the system. Also, the system includes output means for generating messages to the user relating to the status of the control system in general and to the status of devices connected thereto.

receiving, at the first interface, an instrument control command and a unique instrument selection command; and

a network gateway connected to a computer network and operable to retrieve patient data; and
