Abstract

A brush section for use in a powered toothbrush, and a powered toothbrush utilizing the brush section are provided. The brush section has a generally disk shaped carrier from which extends at least one finger that has oral care elements, i.e., bristles and elastomeric cleaning members, extending outwardly therefrom to provide increased contact area between the oral care cleaning elements and oral gingival tissue for enhanced massaging thereof.

Claims

1. A brush section attachable at a proximal end thereof to a handle portion of a powered toothbrush comprising:

a carrier provided at a distal end thereof having a first tooth care element region including a face wherein at least one tooth care element extends from said face;

a drive device for moving said first tooth care element region in a first direction along a path of motion and oscillating said carrier about a pivot axis that extends perpendicular to said face in the first tooth care element region of the carrier;

a second tooth care element region of the carrier extending longitudinally from said first tooth care element region toward said handle portion, said second tooth care element region having at least one tooth care element extending therefrom; and

wherein said first tooth care element region and said second tooth care element region move concurrently in the same first direction along said path of motion.

2. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the carrier is generally egg-shaped.

3. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the first tooth care element region has a planar surface and the second tooth care element region has a sloped surface.

The brush section of claim 1, further comprising a head, wherein the head includes a carrier support platform disposed below the carrier, the carrier support platform having an opening formed therein for receiving a base section of the carrier which engages the drive device for driving the carrier.

5. The brush section of claim 4, wherein the base section is attached at one end to the face of the carrier and an opposite end extends below the carrier support platform through the opening formed therein.

6. The brush section of claim 5, wherein the base section is connected to a rotatable member to permit the base section to be driven in an oscillating manner by the drive device.

7. The brush section of claim 4, wherein the drive device comprises a drive shaft.

8. The brush section of claim 7, wherein an underside of the second tooth care element region of the carrier has a hollow section to accommodate movement of the drive shaft.

9. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the tooth care elements comprise a plurality of elastomeric fingers.

10. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the tooth care elements comprise at least one upstanding elastomeric wall.

11. The brush section of claim 10, wherein the at least one upstanding elastomeric wall comprises a plurality of spaced elastomeric walls.

12. The brush section of claim 11, wherein the plurality of elastomeric walls have different heights.

13. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the at least one tooth care element of the second tooth care element region comprises at least one elastomeric flag.

14. The brush section of claim 13, wherein the at least one elastomeric flag includes a post portion connected to the second tooth care element region and an extended flag portion directed toward the proximal end.

15. The brush section of claim 14, wherein the at least one elastomeric flag comprises a plurality of elastomeric flags.

16. The brush section of claim 1, wherein at least one of the tooth care elements comprises a plurality of bristle tufts.

17. The brush section of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second tooth care element regions includes a plurality of elastomeric fingers.

18. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the carrier is driven such that it oscillates in a rotational manner.

19. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the head includes a carrier support platform disposed below the carrier such that the carrier seats against the carrier support platform, the carrier support platform having an opening formed therein for receiving a base section of the carrier which engages the drive device for driving the carrier.

20. The brush section of claim 1, wherein the carrier defines a face that extends across both of the first and second tooth care element regions.

21. The brush section of claim 20, wherein said face has a shape other than circular or oval.

22. The brush section of claim 1, wherein said second tooth care element region is in the form of a finger member extending longitudinally from the first tooth care element region to the proximal end.

23. A powered toothbrush comprising:

a handle portion; and

a brush portion attachable at a proximal end thereof to the handle portion and including;

a carrier having a first tooth care element region including a face wherein at least one tooth care element extends from said face;

a drive device for moving said first tooth care element region in a first direction along a path of motion and oscillating said carrier about a pivot axis that extends perpendicular to said face in the first tooth care element region of the carrier;

a second tooth care element region of the carrier and extending longitudinally from said first tooth care element region toward said handle portion, said second tooth care element region having at least one tooth care element extending therefrom; and

wherein said first tooth care element region and said second tooth care element region move concurrently in the same first direction along said path of motion.

24. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the carrier is generally egg-shaped.

25. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the first tooth care element region has a planar surface and the second tooth care element region has a sloped surface.

26. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, further comprising a head, wherein the head includes a carrier support platform disposed below the carrier, the carrier support platform having an opening formed therein for receiving a base section of the carrier which engages the drive device for driving the carrier.

27. The powered toothbrush of claim 26, wherein the base section is attached at one end to the face of the carrier and an opposite end extends below the carrier support platform through the opening formed therein.

28. The powered toothbrush of claim 27, wherein the base section is connected to a rotatable member to permit the base section to be driven in an oscillating manner by the drive device.

29. The powered toothbrush of claim 26, wherein the drive device comprises a drive shaft.

30. The powered toothbrush of claim 29, wherein an underside of the second tooth care element region of the carrier has a hollow section to accommodate movement of the drive shaft.

31. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the tooth care elements comprises a plurality of elastomeric fingers.

32. The powered toothbrush claim 23, wherein the tooth care elements comprises at least one upstanding elastomeric wall.

33. The powered toothbrush section of claim 32, wherein the at least one upstanding elastomeric wall comprises a plurality of spaced elastomeric walls.

34. The powered toothbrush section of claim 33, wherein the plurality of elastomeric walls have different heights.

35. The powered toothbrush section of claim 32, wherein the at least one toothcare element of the second tooth care element region comprises at least one elastomeric flag.

36. The powered toothbrush of claim 35, wherein the at least one elastomeric flag includes a post portion connected to the second tooth care element region and an extended flag portion directed toward the proximal end.

37. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein at least one of the tooth care elements comprises a plurality of bristle tufts.

38. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein at least one of the first and second tooth care element regions include a plurality of elastomeric fingers.

39. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the carrier is driven such that it oscillates in a rotational manner.

40. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the head includes a carrier support platform disposed below the carrier such that the carrier seats against the carrier support platform, the carrier support platform having an opening formed therein for receiving a base section of the carrier which engages the drive device for driving the carrier.

41. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein the carrier defines a face that extends across both of the first and second tooth care element regions.

42. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein said face has a shape other than circular or oval.

43. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein said second tooth care element region is in the form of a finger member extending longitudinally from the first tooth care element region to the proximal end.

44. The powered toothbrush of claim 23, wherein a motor for said drive device is contained in said handle portion.

45. A brush section attachable at a proximal end thereof to a handle portion of a powered toothbrush comprising:

a carrier having a generally disk-shaped region wherein at least one tooth care element extends therefrom, said carrier oscillates about a first axis that extends through said generally disk-shaped region;

a drive device for driving said generally disk-shaped region in a first direction along a path of motion about said first axis;

at least one finger region of said carrier extending longitudinally from said generally disk-shaped region towards said handle portion, said at least one finger region having at least one tooth care element extending therefrom; and

wherein said at least one finger region and said generally disk-shaped region move concurrently in the same first direction along said path of motion about said first axis.

46. A powered toothbrush comprising:

a handle portion;

a brush portion attachable at a proximal end thereof to the handle portion and including;

a carrier having a generally disk-shaped region wherein at least one tooth care element extends therefrom, said carrier oscillates about a first axis that extends through said generally disk-shaped region;

a drive device for driving said generally disk-shaped region in a path of motion about said first axis;

at least one finger region of said carrier extending longitudinally from said generally disk-shaped region towards said handle portion, said at least one finger region having at least one tooth care element extending therefrom; and

wherein said at least one finger region moves in the same path of motion and about said first axis as said generally disk-shaped region.
