Abstract

A system for automating the growing of crops, such as grapevines. Combinations of data from sensors local to a vineyard, and from optional remote stations and sensors, is combined with a control system to accurately control the dispensing of water and chemicals such as insecticides, disease prevention fungicides and fertilizers. The materials are dispensed through a multiple channel conduit which allows conflicting, or incompatible, types of materials to be transported through a common assembly. Sensors are attached to the conduit so that the placement of sensors can occur simultaneously with the laying of the conduit. This approach also ensures correct placement and spacing of the sensors with respect to each plant, or plant area, to be monitored and treated.

Claims

1. A system for automated application of insecticide to a plant, the system comprising:

an insect sensor positioned adjacent to the plant, wherein the insect sensor includes a DNA sensor;

a control system coupled to the insect sensor for receiving a signal from the insect sensor;

a conduit for conveying an insecticide to the plant;

a flow control system coupled between the control system and the conduit for allowing the control system to control the flow of insecticide to the plant in response to the insect sensor.

a process for determining the type of insect detected by the insect sensor based on a signal from the DNA sensor.

2. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensors, wherein each sensor is associated with, and in fixed proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system coupled to one or more of the sensors for receiving a signal from the sensors;

emitters for emitting the material to a plant, wherein each emitter is associated with, and in fixed proximity to, one of the plants; and

a control system for controlling emission of the material to a particular plant via the particular plant'"'"'s associated emitter in response to a signal from the particular plant'"'"'s associated sensor.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein a group includes a given plant, one or more emitters associated with the given plant and one or more sensors associated with the given plant, wherein for each group the system further comprising:

control circuitry located in proximity to the group.

4. The system of claim 2, further comprising:

control circuitry located remotely from the plants.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein the material includes a pesticide.

9. The system of claim 2, wherein the material includes water.

11. The system of claim 2, wherein the material includes a plant nutrient.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein a sensor includes

a light source;

and

a light detector positioned with respect to the light source and a plant so that light from the light source is directed to the plant before being directed to the light detector.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the light detector includes an infrared light detector.

14. The system of claim 2, wherein the material includes a fungicide.

17. The system of claim 2, further comprising:

a conduit for conveying the material to the emitters, wherein the emitters are arranged onto the conduit at regular intervals.

18. The system of claim 2, wherein a single sensor is associated with a plant.

19. The system of claim 2, wherein a single emitter is associated with a plant.

6. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensors, wherein each sensor is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system coupled to one or more of the sensors for receiving a signal from the sensors;

emitters for emitting the material to a plant, wherein each emitter is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system for controlling emission of the material to a particular plant via the particular plant'"'"'s associated emitter in response to a signal from the particular plant'"'"'s associated sensor;

wherein the material includes a pesticide; and

wherein the sensor includes an insect sensor.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the insect sensor includes a DNA sensor.

8. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensors, wherein each sensor is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system coupled to one or more of the sensors for receiving a signal from the sensors;

emitters for emitting the material to a plant, wherein each emitter is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system for controlling emission of the material to a particular plant via the particular plant'"'"'s associated emitter in response to a signal from the particular plant'"'"'s associated sensor; and

wherein the sensor includes a protein sensor.

10. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensors, wherein each sensor is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system coupled to one or more of the sensors for receiving a signal from the sensors;

emitters for emitting the material to a plant, wherein each emitter is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system for controlling emission of the material to a particular plant via the particular plant'"'"'s associated emitter in response to a signal from the particular plant'"'"'s associated sensor;

wherein the material includes water; and

wherein the sensor includes a leaf wetness sensor.

15. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensors, wherein each sensor is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system coupled to one or more of the sensors for receiving a signal from the sensors;

emitters for emitting the material to a plant, wherein each emitter is associated with, and in proximity to, one of the plants;

a control system for controlling emission of the material to a particular plant via the particular plant'"'"'s associated emitter in response to a signal from the particular plant'"'"'s associated sensor;

wherein the material includes a fungicide; and

a sensor for detecting at least one factor related to plant disease.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the control system uses a disease risk model to determine the desired flow of fungicides to the plant.

20. A method for application of a material to a plurality of plants, wherein the material is emitted onto the plants via a plurality of emitters, the method comprising:

associating one or more sensors and emitters with each of the plurality of plants so that each plant has associated sensors and emitters in fixed proximity to the plant;

using a control system to receive signals from sensors associated with a given plant; and

using the control system to control the emission of the material onto the given plant via the emitters associated with the given plant.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the control system includes control circuitry located in proximity to a plant.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the control system includes control circuitry located remotely from the plants.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the material includes a pesticide.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein the material includes water.

29. The method of claim 20, wherein the material includes a plant nutrient.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein a sensor includes

a light source;

and

a light detector positioned with respect to the light source and a plant so that light from the light source is directed to the plant before being directed to the light detector.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the light detector includes an infrared light detector.

32. The method of claim 20, wherein the material includes a fungicide.

35. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

using a conduit for conveying the material to the emitters, wherein the emitters are arranged onto the conduit at regular intervals.

24. A method for application of a material to a plurality of plants, wherein the material is emitted onto the plants via a plurality of emitters, the method comprising:

associating one or more sensors with each of the plurality of plants;

associating one or more sensors and emitters with each of the plurality of plants so that each plant has associated sensors and emitters in fixed proximity to the plant;

using a control system to receive signals from sensors associated with a given plant; and

using the control system to control the emission of the material onto the given plant via the emitters associated with the given particular plant;

wherein the material includes a pesticide; and

wherein the sensor includes an insect sensor.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the insect sensor includes a DNA sensor.

26. A method for application of a material to a plurality of plants, wherein the material is emitted onto the plants via a plurality of emitters, the method comprising:

associating one or more sensors with each of the plurality of plants;

associating one or more sensors and emitters with each of the plurality of plants so that each plant has associated sensors and emitters in fixed proximity to the plant;

using a control system to receive signals from sensors associated with a given plant; and

using the control system to control the emission of the material onto the given plant via the emitters associated with the given particular plant;

wherein the material includes a pesticide; and

wherein the sensor includes a protein sensor.

28. A method for application of a material to a plurality of plants, wherein the material is emitted onto the plants via a plurality of emitters, the method comprising:

associating one or more sensors with each of the plurality of plants;

associating one or more sensors and emitters with each of the plurality of plants so that each plant has associated sensors and emitters in fixed proximity to the plant;

using a control system to receive signals from sensors associated with a given plant; and

using the control system to control the emission of the material onto the given plant via the emitters associated with the given particular plant;

wherein the material includes water; and

wherein the sensor includes a leaf wetness sensor.

33. A method for application of a material to a plurality of plants, wherein the material is emitted onto the plants via a plurality of emitters, the method comprising:

associating one or more sensors with each of the plurality of plants;

associating one or more sensors and emitters with each of the plurality of plants so that each plant has associated sensors and emitters in fixed proximity to the plant;

using a control system to receive signals from sensors associated with a given plant; and

using the control system to control the emission of the material onto the given plant via the emitters associated with the given particular plant;

wherein the material includes a fungicide; and

further comprising;

detecting at least one factor related to plant disease.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising

using a disease risk model to determine the desired flow of fungicides to the plant.

36. A system for application of a material to a plurality of plants, the system comprising

emitting means for emitting the material onto the plants, wherein one or more emitters is in fixed proximity to and associated with each of the plants;

sensing means for sensing a condition of growth of the plants, wherein one or more sensors is in fixed proximity to and associated with each of the plants; and

control system means for receiving signals from a sensor associated with the particular plant and for controlling emission of the material to the particular plant via one or more emitters associated with the particular plant.
