Abstract

A mattress (900) provides a user with three-dimensional firmness zoning, the mattress (900) cooperating with a mattress shell (720). The mattress (900) includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced, transversely extending resilient blocks (910) being independently movable relative to one another, an inflatable bladder (914) positioned to lie upon the top side of at least one of the blocks (910), and a topper (912) positioned to lie upon the inflatable bladder (914), the topper including opposite ends configured for attachment to the shell (720).

Claims

1. A mattress including first and second regions having first and second different compressibilities, respectively, the first and second regions defining a substantially continuous surface upon which a person reclines, the first region supporting a first region of the body of the person reclining on the mattress, the second region supporting a second region of the body of the person,

wherein at least one of the regions includes a softer upper layer, a firmer intermediate layer and a softer lower layer presenting a first compressibility to a person reclining on the at least one of the regions during a first interval of compression and a second compressibility to the person on the at least one of the regions during a second interval of compression, and

further including an anti-shear material between the first and second regions permitting relative movement between the first and second regions.

2. The mattress of claim 1 wherein the anti-shear material includes a sleeve for receiving one of the first and second regions.

3. The mattress of claim 2 wherein the anti-shear material includes sleeves for receiving both of the first and second regions.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one region gives a softer feel when the person'"'"'s weight is distributed generally uniformly over the at least one region, and gives a firmer feel when the person'"'"'s weight is not distributed generally uniformly over the at least one region.

5. The mattress of claim 1 wherein the mattress has first and second ends and first and second sides, the first region lying closer to the first end and the second region lying closer to the second end.

6. The mattress of claim 1 wherein the mattress has first and second ends and first and second sides, the first region lying closer to the first side and the second region lying closer to the second side.

7. Apparatus for retaining an elongate mattress on an elongate foundation, the mattress including a first surface and the foundation including a second surface adjacent which the first surface rests when the mattress is on the foundation, the apparatus including an elongated and laterally-extending relief formed in one of the first and second surfaces, and an elongated and laterally-extending retainer configured to be received in the relief, the retainer being coupled to the other of the first and second surfaces, and

wherein the first surface includes a first end and a second end and the second surface includes a first end and a second end, and wherein the retainer is positioned closer to one of the first and second ends of one of the first and second surfaces and the relief is positioned closer to a corresponding one of the first and second ends of the other of the first and second surfaces.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the relief is formed in the first surface and the retainer is coupled to the second surface.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the mattress and the foundation each has first and second sides, the first surface comprises one of the ends of the mattress and the second surface comprises one of the ends of the foundation.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein one of the first and second surfaces is generally vertical.

11. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the elongated and laterally-extending relief and retainer each extend along a majority of the width of the mattress.
