1. A medical system, comprising:

  • one or more reference catheters having a plurality of ultrasound reference transducers;

    a medical device having one or more ultrasound target transducers; and

    localization processing circuitry coupled to the ultrasound reference and target transducers, the processing circuitry configured for causing the ultrasound reference transducers to transmit and receive ultrasound signals between each other in order to establish a three-dimensional coordinate system, and for causing the plurality of ultrasound reference transducers and the one or more ultrasound target transducers to transmit and receive ultrasound signals between each other in order to determine a position of the one or more ultrasound target transducers within the three-dimensional coordinate system.
